TONGLAND.

Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Abbey of Tongland.

 

1574. WILLIAM SCHARPO, exhorter in 15 67. Sannik, Kirkanders, Girton, and Anweth were also of the charge in 1574 with a stipend of lx. li. He held the vicarage 7th Jan. 1586. In 1594 Kirkchrist and Sannik were only in addition. He was deprived of the vicarage of Sannik before 19th Feb. 1596. The charge was reduced to T. only in 1599. He continued in 1614.-[Reg. 1585. GEORGE GORDOUN, appears as principal, and the preceding, only as subordinate. He continued in 1586.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1618. JAMES SYMSON, A.M., probably son of Mr Patrick S., min. of Stirling, had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1600, was admitted to the Exercise there 1st Feb. 1605, went to France, returned in Aug. 1612, and got a testimonial from the Presb. of Stirling 27th Jan. 1613. He was a member of the Assembly 1618, voted against the Articles enjoined at Perth, and was trans. to Bathgate same year.-[Stirling Presb. Reg., Book of the Kirk, Cadderwood's Hist.]

 

1619. JAMES SCOTT, A. M., trans. from Kirktown, he was a member of the Commission for the maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. 1634. In 1636 he contributed g merks towards the building the library of the Un1Y. of Glasgow. He refused to subscribe the Covenant, and was deposed by a Committee of the Gen. Assembly in 1639, for absence from his flocke eight Sabbaths together, sacrilege, intromitting with penalties and contributions, disobedience to the Presb., tabling (playing at draughts), conversing with excommunicated Papists, and declining the Gen. Assembly. He was inst. to the Rectory of Ford, Northumberland, 11th Dec. 1660, had £100 sterl. allowed by Parliament 5th July 1661, which was increased £50, 23d April 1663, "because he hath been an extraordinary sufferer these twenty-four years bygane" He had the sentence of deposition declared null by James, Bishop of Galloway before 25th Oct. 1664.-[Stranraer, and Jedburgh Presb. 1640. GEORGE RUTHERFURD, A.M., brother of Mr Samuel R., min. of Anwoth, born at Nisbet, in Teviotdale, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1622. Through the interest of Provost Fullerton and others he was appointed in Dec. 1629 schoolmaster and reader in Kirkcudbright, which offices he was obliged to resign about the end of 1636, in obedience to the court of High Commission, when he retired to Ayrshire. He was ord. about 1640; was a member of the Commission of Assembly in 1647, continued 29th Aug. 1648; died previous to 15th Dec. 1668. Tradition says he presented to the church the bell which is still in use. He left three daugh., Marion, wife of Robert Hutton of Newlands, Barbara, and Martha, wife of John Black, merchant, Kirkcudbright, who were served heirs; besides them he had a son Samuel.-[Reg. 1661. SAMUEL ARNOT, A.M., brother of David Arnot of Barcaple, had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1649, adm. in 1661; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was complained of to the Privy Council 24th Feb. 1663
