His mind, naturally strong and vigorous, was cultivated by meditation and study. With the writers of Greece and Rome, as those of his own country, he was well acquainted. But ethical and metaphysical science was that in which he excelled. His thorough knowledge of the Deistical controversy made him often the referee of his clerical brethren. While his sermons were rational and pathetic, they exhibited that fervent and genuine piety which was invariably displayed in his life and conversation. In parochial examinations he was so successful that he verily believed he did more good by these in the winter season, than by all his preaching throughout the year.
