KELTON.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood. The parish was supplied by JAMES PANE, reader in 1567; THOMAS MAKCOUTRIE from 1574 to 1579; and ALEXANDER YOUNG from 1580 to 1586.

 

1615. ARCHIRALD M'CLELLANE, removed from Kirkcormac, pres. by James VI. 4th Jan.; demitted before 17th Aug. 1627.-[Reg. See. Sigill., and Pres.]

 

1627. ROBERT M'CLELLANE, A.M., son of James M., burgess of the Canongate, had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d July 1620, Ares. by Charles I. 17th Aug. 1627; deposed by a Committee of the Gen. Assembly 1638, for insufficiencie for the ministrie, intemperate drinking, and disobedience to the Presb., which judgment was affirmed by the Assembly 27th August 1639. A petition from him was remitted by the Assembly to the Presb. three days after.-[Edin. Grad., Reg. See. Sigill. and Pres., Peterkin's Records, Stevenson's Hist.]

 

164-. JAMES FERGUSSON, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1631; was here in the time of the pestilence, 23d Nov. 1648, and was, according to Wodrow, deprived on the establishment of Episcopacy, which seems doubtful. 1668. JAMES ADAMSONE, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1663, ord. and adm. 29th April 1668; ousted by the rabble in 1689. He died at Edinburgh 11th Aug. 1713, in his 65th year, and 46th min. He had a daugh. Henrietta.-[Edin. Grad, Syn., Edin., and Dumfries Reg. (Bur.), List of Disorderly, MS. 1695. WILLIAM FALCONER; died 21st May 1727, in 61st age, and 32d min. He had two daugh., Elizabeth and Anne.-[Syn., Presb., and Test. Reg. (Dumf.), Tombst., &c.]

 

1730. JOHN LAMONT, son of John L. of Newton, licen. by the Presb. of Wigton l0th Jan. 1727, called 1st Oct. 1729, and ord. (by a conjunct meeting, appointed by the Commission of Assembly) 12th May 1730; died 30th Jan. 1776, in 76th age, and 46th min. He marr. 20th Dec. 1736, Margaret, daugh. of John Affieck of Whitepark, she died 13th Jan. 1795, and had six sons and four daugh., of whom the Rev. 1776. THOMAS HALLIDAY, pres. by George III. 24th Feb., and ord. 24th Sept.; died 22d April 1807, in his 74th year, and 31st min. 1808. JOHN M'CLELLAN, son of Mr John M., Kirkcudbright, pres. by George III. 28th Sept. 1807, and ord. 31st March following; died 6th June 1840, in 54th age, and 33d min. " His reasoning powers were of a superior order, and formed the characteristic feature
