1690. WILLIAM ERSKINE, A.M., above noticed, and indulged at Carsphairn, was restored by the foresaid Act of Parliament; though his return seems doubtful.-[MS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]

1699. PATRICK JOHNSTON, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 3d July 1693, ord. 5tb April 1699; died 10th March 1736, aged about 63, in 37th min. His grandson, Patrick Johnston, Esq. of Carnsalloch, had a son who marr. a daugh. of Murray of Broughton.-[Edin. Grad., Sess., Presb., and Syn. Reg., New St. Acc. iv., &c.]

 

1737. ROBERT THOMSON, called 14th March, and ord. 11th May; died 14th March 1758, in 48th age and 21st min.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., New St. Acc. iv., &c.]

 

1759. ROBERT COOPER, A.M., son of Mr Will. C., min. of Mocbrum, studied and acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th April 1744, licen. by the Presb. of Wigton 16th May 1749, ord. 7th March 1759; died 7th Nov. 1776, in 52d age and 18th min. His learning and knowledge were extensive, especially in several branches of philosophy, and few better deserved the character of a useful pastor, a worthy man, and a good Christian.-[Edin. 1778. JOHN MACKNAUGHT, pres. by George III. 31st March 1777, ord. 31st March 1778; he was pres. to Balmaclellan by George III. 17th July 1779, which did not take effect; deposed 23d May 1793 for blasphemy, drunkenness, and taking money as a justice of peace, &c. He afterwards celebrated marriages and baptisms irregularly, and died l lth Nov. 1808.[Presb., and Syn. Reg., New St. Acc. iv., Scots Mag. liv. lv., Lockhart's Life of Scott, &c.]

 

1794. WILLIAM THORBURN, licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries, ord. by the Presb. in July 1790, as assistant to the preceding, adm. 16th Jan. 1794; trans. to Troqueer 1st July 1801.[Presb., and Syn. Reg., New St. Acc. iv.]

 

1801. ROBERT GORDON, trans. from Carsphairn, pres. by George III. 27th Aug,, and adm. 24th Dec.; died 23d Dec. 1817, in 49th age, and 26th min. "He was an elegant scholar, and a respectable clergyman, of tall, genteel figure, mild countenance, polite manners, and great goodness of heart."-[Presb. 1818. ROBERT JEFFREY, a native of Hoddam, Dumfriessh., licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 27th Aug. 1811, pres. by George, Prince Regent in May, and ord. 27th Aug. 1818; got a new church built same year. Having been appointed to supply the vacant church of Crossmichael, 16th July 1820, he prayed for the Queen, as was his constant practice, and calling, by request, a meeting of the Kirk-session after service, they resolved that no minister appointed to preach in that parish during the vacancy should pray in express words for her Majesty. As moderator, he dissented and complained to the Presbytery, who at their meeting, 2d Aug. following, ordered “the said resolution to be erased from the Session-book." He was elected Synod Clerk 24th Oct. 1826. On joining in the Free Secession, and signing the deed of Demission, he was declared no longer a min. of this church 14th June 1843, and died 9th March 1844, aged 57, in 26th min. He marr. 19th Dec. 1820 Janet, second daugh. of the Rev. James Thomson, Balmaclellan, and had two sons, Rev.
