1690. JAMES ARMSTRANG, when the first meeting of Presb. is recorded, 7th Aug. He was a member of the Assemblies 1690 and 1692, and was trans. to Canonbie in March 1694. [Presb. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1690, 1692.]
1694, JOHN Pow, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th July 1688, called in June, and ord. 7th Aug. 1694; died 5th Jan. 1735, aged ab6ut 67, in 41st min., "a grave, peaceable, and judicious man." He had two sons, Robert, merchant and baillie of Coldstream, and Mr John, preacher of the Gospel.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Test. Reg. (Laud.), Boston's Mem.]
1735. WILLIAM WILSONE, A.M., appointed "doctor" in George Heriot's Hospital 20th June 1720, was graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 13th Dec. same year, licen. by the Presb. of Hamilton 31st Oct. 1732, pres. by Thomas, Lord Binning, in May, and ord. 30th Oct. 1735; died 16th June 1777, in 42d min. 1778. JAMES BELL, son of Mr. Robert B., min. of Strathaven, and nephew to the author. of " The Seasons," by whom he succeeded to the small estate of Wide-open, which he afterwards sold. He was educated by his uncle, the schoolmaster of Lanark. While engaged in his studies at the Univ. of Glasgow he wrote a poetical elegy on the death of a young lady, which was published by two of his companions-Boswell, the biographer of Johnson, and Andrew Erskine, Esq.-with critical recommendations and ironical compliments, which turned it into burlesque, and induced him to seek fame no longer in the walks of poesy; licen. by the Presb. of Hamilton 25th Feb. 1766, appointed preacher to the Univ. of Glasgow, pres. by Thomas, Earl of Haddington, in Aug. 1777. Delay was occasioned by a competing presentation from his Majesty to Mr. Ales. Girvan, afterwards min. of Langton, but the Lords of Session, having in July found the right in his lordship, Mr B. was ord. 24th Sept. 1778. He had D.D. conferred by the Univ. of Glasgow 4th Dec. 1789, and died 9th Aug. 1794, in his 53d year, and 16th min. He marr. 19th April 1779, Anne Clark, who died 17th Oct. 1826, and had a daugh. 1795. ROBERT SCOTT, trans. from Legerwood, pres. by Charles, Earl of Haddington 25th Nov. 1794, adm. 3rd July following; died unmarried 17th Jan. 1830, aged 77, in 37th min. -[Presb. Reg.]
1830. THOMAS SMITH GOLDIE, son of the Rev. George G. min. of Athelstanford, licen. by the Presb. of Dunbar 5th Dec. 1821, became assistant to the Rev. Dr Simpson of Edinburgh (Trop Church), and was pres. by the Commissioner of Thomas, Earl of Haddington, 30th Jan. and ord. 14th May 1830; died at Edinburgh 5th July 1859, in his 61st year, and 30th min.
