GIRTHON. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Bishops of Galloway. The parish was supplied by ROBERT MUIR, exhorter, from 1567, reader, 1580, and vicar 1587.
1595. JOHN BONAR, A.M., trans. from Hassendean, or perhaps North Ronaldsay, Anwoth being also in the charge; continued in 15 9 6, and was trans. to Gelston.-[Reg. Assig., New St. Acc. iv.]

1619. ALEXANDER FRISSEL, who is said to have been ignorant and unqualified, thrust on the par. by Bishop Cowper, in opposition to the wishes not only of the parishioners, but also of all the. ministers in the Diocese. 1636. PATRICK M'LELLANE, He contributed v li towards erecting the library of the Univ. of Glasgow in 1636, and continued 15th May 1655. He had a son, and a daugh. 1658. WILLIAM ERSKINE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 1st Aug. 1651; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was accused before the Privy Council 24th Feb. following of "still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State." 1666. SIMON KNOX, A.M., youngest son of Mr Will.
