CROSSMICHAEL.

The Church was dedicated to St. Michael, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Sweet-heart, or New Abbey. The parish was supplied by THOMAS MAKCLUNE, exhorter, at Nov. 1567, and by THOMAS MAKCLANE, from 1574 to 1588.

 

1588. JAMES CARRUTHERS, removed from Buittle; Kirkcormok and Balmaghie were also in the charge; continued in 1590, and removed to Balmaghie.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1590. JOHN DOUGLAS, he does not appear in the register again till 1595, continued in 1596.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

16-. PETER PRYMROIS, A.M., removed from Parton, where he had previously been “thir years bygane," and was pres. to Mauchlin by James VI. 13th Dec. 1615, he did not remove, but had a charter of the ecclesiastical lands of Crossmichael 8th Jan. 1624, and continued 25th Sept. 1638.-[Reg. Pres., Sec. Sigill, and Old Dec. iii., Douglas's Peer. ii., Stranraer Presb. Reg., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Commiss. to Ass. 1638.]

 

1658. JAMES BUGLOSS, on the Exercise at 8t. Andrews 11th Dec. 1650. In Jan. 1662 he was appointed by the Presb., with another to go to Edinburgh and petition the Privy Council to remove the restriction on meetings of presbyteries, but was deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. same year. He was accused before the Privy Council 24th Feb. following, of “still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State." He and Alison Gordon, his spouse, had saline of the lands of Grange 22d Jan. 1663.-[Edin. (Bapt.), Durrfries Presb., and New Gen. Reg. Sasines v., Wodrow's Hist., and MSS., &c.]

 

1663. PATRICK SUINTOUNE, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 13th June 1651, licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh 27th Feb. 1663, passed trials before the Presb. of Dunse in order to a church and got a testimonial 21st April thereafter for ordination. He had sasine of the ecclesiastical lands of Crossmichael 1st March 1666, and was trans. to Borgue same year. - [Edin. Grad., Reg. Collat, Dunse Presb., Syn., and New Gen. Reg. Sasines xiv.]

 

1668. JOHN WAUGH, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1668, ord. and adm. 29th April same year, continued 27th April 1671.-[Edin. Grad., Syn. Reg.]

168-. JAMES ADAMSON, A.M., trans. from Stonykirk; outed by the people in 1689, and died in May 1699, aged about 55.-[MS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]

 

1692. JOHN MURDOCH, A.M., got his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 11th July 1687; died 1st August 1700, in 41st age; Agnes Colden, his widow, died 13th May 1732, aged 73. --- [Edin. Grad., Syn., and Presb. Reg., Tombst. &c.]

 

1702. ROBERT GORDONE, licen. by the Presb. of Wigton 6th Aug. 1700, called 4th Nov. 1701, and ord. 8th April succeeding; died 2d March 1722, in his 41st year, and 20th min.
