1646. JOHN SEMPLE, officiated for a time as precentor or clerk to one of the min. settled in the Co. Down. His entering on the ministry arose from an accidental circumstance. It was the custom at that time, and in that country, to begin Divine service by singing a Psalm which continued till the min. arrived. Thinking the min. tarried long, " he had an impulse " to enlarge on the psalm he had sung, and " was carried out in great liberty." The ministers around considering there was a specialty in this, took private trial of him, and being satisfied of his edifying gifts, gave him licence to exercise in private houses and families. After this he was much followed through the country, filling the houses, and frequently barns, and so was a happy instrument in converting many souls. He had, however, some narrow escapes from being made prisoner. He joined the Protesting party in the church, was one of those seized by order of the Committee of Estates, and imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle, 23d Aug. 1660. His stipend was sequestered by their order 25th Sept. following. He was included in the number of rebels, whom the lieges were discharged to receive, 4th Dec. 1666, and of those who were to be prosecuted 15th Aug. 1667; also in that of those to whom pardon and indemnity were granted 1st Oct. thereafter.-[Reid's Ireland i., Ayr, and Dumfries Presb. Reg., Reg. Old Dec. i., Baillie's Lett., Kirkton, and Wodrow's Hist., Nicoll, and Lamont's Diaries, &c.]

1664. NORMAN M'KENZIE, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1656, becoming a bursar of theology in 1659. While an expectant in 1660 he was appointed by the magistrates of Glasgow to examine the West quarter of the city; adm. to this par. before 25th Oct. 1664; trans. to Whithorn after 1st Nov. 1665. 1672. JOHN SEMPLE, above mentioned, indulged, at the request of Alex., Viscount Kenmure, by the Privy Council 3d Sept.; he was fined by them 10th July 1673, for not keeping the anniversary of his Majesty's Restoration, and cited before them 4th Aug. 1677, when, being threatened with death or banishment, he boldly replied, " He is above that guides the gully (knife), my God will not let you either kill me or banish me, but I will go home and
