CARSPHAIRN. A supplication was presented to the Gen. Assembly, 16th June 1638, in name of this church, stating "it lyeas in a very desolat wilderness, containing five hundred communicants." That it had been built at the expense of some gentlemen " out of love to the salvation of souls of barbarous and ignorant people, who had heretofore lived without the knowledge of God, their children unbaptized, their dead unburied, and no way for getting maintenance to a minister." On the day following the Assembly recommended a contribution to be made by all south of Tay for getting up a stipend to the minister, which was renewed by the succeeding Assembly. It was then erected from portions of Kells and Dalry, after 11th Sept. 1639, recommended by the Assembly in January, and sanctioned by Parliament 8th March 1645. The parish was disjoined from the Presb. of Kirkcudbright; and annexed to that of Wigton by the Gen. Assembly 24th Jan. 1699, but again re-united to the former by the Assembly 22d March 1703.
