in 1617, in 41st min. He was a member of at least sixteen General Assemblies. Calderwood says of hem, " the man was ambitious, and readie to embrace any preferment." 1617. FRANCIS HEPBURNE, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 25th July 1612 pres. by James VI. 18th Nov. 1617. In 1627 there were in the parish " of communicante: eight hundreth, all aboue the age of sextein." Mr H. continued 14th Dec. 1632, but was subsequently deprived.-[Reg. Lavur. Univ. Kdin., Seec. Sigill, and Pres., Sed.-book of Teinds, Stat. Reports 1627.

 

1641. THOMAS HEPBURN, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1636; trans. to Oldhamstocks in 1642.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St And., Reg. Sec. Sigill, and Pres.]

 

1642. JAMES HOME, son of Air Alexander H., min. of Ayton, pres. by Charles I. 1st Dec. 1641; continued 3d May 1653, and was probably deprived; died before 14th Jan. 1671, when his son Mr James, writer to the signet, Edin., was served heir. He also left three daugh., Margaret, Jean, spouse to Alexander Kynneir, writer, Edinburgh, and Rachel.[Reg. Sec. Sigill, and Pres., Peebles Presb., and Test. Reg. (Laud.), Inq. Ret. Gen. 5387, and Berwick, 381.]

 

1659. WILLIAM JOHNSTONE, A.M., trans. from Lauder, deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662; died before 2d April 1685. He marr. Isobel Maitland, and had a son, who was served hein-[Syn. (Kelso Presb.), Lothian Syn., and Edin. Reg. (Sasines), Wodrow's Hist., Inq. Ret. Gen. Berwick 420, and Gen. 6634.]

 

1663. DAVID RORERTSON, A-M., trans. from Polwarth, adm. after 25th Aug; continued 14th Oct. 1684, and died in May 1685, in 42d min. He marr. Agnes, daugh. of Mr Andrew Stevenson, min. of Dunbar, she died 29th May 1704, in whose right he entered burgess and guild-brother of Edinburgh l 0th April 1678, he had two sons Andrew, and Mr. Patrick, Vicar of Berwick-upon-Tweed, who was served heir 26th Jan. 1700.-[Dunse Presb., Edin. 1686. -THOMAS BLAIR, A.M., trans. from Tyningham, deprived by the Privy Council 26th Sept. 1689, for not praying for their majesties William and Mary, not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not observing the thanksgiving, nor observing the thanksgiving for the voluntary contribution. He was inst. to the united curacies of Cornhill and Branxton in 1728, and died 23d Aug. 1736, aged about 85, in 53d min. On him Captain Ord composed the following epitaph:

 

" Here lies the Reverend Thomas Blair,

                                                     A man of worth and merit,

Who preached for fifty years and mair

     According to the spirit.

He preached off book to shun

     offence, And what is still more

 rare,

He never spoke a word of

    sense, So preached Tammy

    Blair."
