BUITTLE.

Anciently girkennan, the church being dedicated to St Inan, and previous to the Reformation belonging to the Abbey of Sweetheart, or Newabbey. The parish was supplied by JAMES PARKER, exhorter, from 1567 to 1574.

 

1574. JAMES CARRUTHERS, Exhorter at Parton in 1570; Crossmichael, Kelton, Gelston, Kirkcormack, and Balmaghie being also under his care, with a stipend of lx li. Continued in 1586, and removed to Crossmichael.-[Reg. Min., and Assig., Wodrow Miscell., Test. Reg.]

 

1588. DAVID AIKMAN; continued in 1591, when Gelston and Kirkcormok were also in the charge. Ns he does Dot appear after, he is probably the person who was murdered with Blyth, at his residence outside of Kirkcudbright, by the Mures in 1593.-[Reg. Assig., Calderwood's Hist.]

 

1614. PATRICK ADAMSON, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews 1604. In 1636 he contributed ii. dollars towards building the library of the Univ. Glasgow, he was deposed by a Committee of the Gen. Assembly in 1639, because of "his insufficiency for the ministry, frequent drunkenness on the Sabbath, and disobedience to the Presbyterie."-[Reg. 1640. JOHN SOMERVAILE, officiated and received part of the stipend in 1640-1641.-[ Wodrow MSS., War Committee of Kirkcudbright.]

 

1642. JOHN DUNLOP, A.M., brother of Mr Alexander D., min. of Paisley, was laureated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1634, and gave xxvi li v s. towards building the library of that Univ. 29th June 1635, adm. in 1642; died in 1643, or 1644, aged about 29 or 30. His brother considered him “far above him for parts."- [Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Wodrow's Anal., and MSS.]

 

1645. ROBERT FERGUSSON, A.M., brother of Mr James F., min. of Kelton, had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1638; was a member of the Commission of Assembly in 1649. Continuing with others to hold meetings of the Presbytery after they had been discharged 9th Jan. 1662, he was carried to Edinburgh in June following, yet speedily returned, but was deprived on the establishment of Episcopacy, and called before the Privy Council 24th Feb. 1663. 1666. WILLIAM HARVIE, a native of Aberdeen, took his degree at the Univ. and King's College there in 1661; he deserted his charge and left the Kingdom, in consequence of scandalous offences proved against him, and the parish was declared vacant in 1668. He marr. Margaret Ker.-[Fasti Aberd., Syn., and Test. Reg.]

 

1669. JOHN LOGAN, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1665, ord. and adm. 29th April 1669; continued 27th April 1671, when he was admonished to wait on his charge more diligently for the future.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Syn. Reg.]

 

1676. JAMES WALKER, A.M., a native of Aberdeen, got his degree at the Univ. and King's College there 19th July 1666; outed by the people in 1689, went to Edinburgh and died 11th Dec. 1723, aged 73. He marr. 10th Oct. 1676 Margaret, second daugh. of Mr John Balvaird, min. of Glammis; she died 20th Oct. 1736, and had a son John, and a daugh. Elizabeth
