flock, and was regarded in the double light of a pastor and friend, though he never lost sight of the respect due to his office and to himself. For many years he took a deep interest in agricultural improvements, and had considerable experience as a practical farmer. He was of tall, slender figure, with a gentle bend in his gait, of slow, deliberate speech, acute observation, independent thinking, extensive information, and liberal sentiments. He marr. 17th Nov. 1783 Janet, only daugh. of Mr James Carruthers, merchant, Dumfries; she died 21st Oct. 1831, and had three sons, Samuel, who afterwards enjoyed the cure, James of South Carleton, and John, merchant, New York, and five daughter -Publications-General View of the Agriculture of Galloway, Lond. 1810, 8vo; Accounts of Carsphairn, and of Borgue (Sinclair's St. Ace. vii., xi., xxi.(-[Presb. 1816. JAMES GORDON, son of Mr Thomas G., Culraven, in the parish, a farm occupied by his ancestors for many generations,-became tutor in the family of Martin Dalrymple, Esq. of Fordel and Cleland, licen. by the Presb. of Hamilton 12th June 1811, pres. by George III. in April, and ord. 19th Sept. 1816; died 8th April 1834, in 50th age and 18th min. He marr. 17th Dec. 1816 Isabella, daughter of Mr James Henry in Bishopton, and had four sons, one of whom, Thomas, is min. of Newbattle, and four daugh., Mary marr. the Rev. John Donaldson, A.M., Kirkconnel, Jessie, Isabella, and Agnes-Jane.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg. &c.]
1834. SAMUEL SMITH, youngest son of a former incumbent, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 20th Aug. 1823, pres. by William IV. 30th April, and ord. 18th Sept. 1834. On joining in the Free Secession, and signing he deed of Demission, ha was declared no longer a min. of this church 14th June 1843. He marr. 4th Aug. 1831 Agnes William, daugh. of William Wotherspoon, Esq., architect, Edinburgh, and had one daugh. marr. SANWICK, or SANDWICK. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Tongland. The parish was supplied by DONALD MAKAILLANE, or MAKCULLAYN, reader, from 1567 to 1579; and GILBERT M'CLELLAN from 1585 to 1588; and was suppressed and united to Borgue and Kirkandrews by the Commissioners of Parliament for Teinds 20th June 1618.
KIRKANDREWS. The church was dedicated to St. Andrew, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Priory of Whithorn. The parish was supplied by JOHN MAECLELLANE, reader, from 1567 to 1586. An Act of Parliament was passed regarding it 16th Feb. 1649, but it was annexed to Borgue in or before 1657. |
