PRESBYTERY OF KIRKCUDBRIGHT p. 700
BORGUE. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Priory of Whithorn. The parish was supplied by WILLIAM SANDERSOUNE, reader, from 1576 to 1586; WILLIAM CUTLAR, 1588, 1589.
1590. JOHN AIEMAN, A.M., removed from Twynham. Twynham, Kirkandrews, and Sanwick were also under his charge. He was deposed or deprived; but was reponed and re-adm. at Twynham prior to 1594.-[Reg. Assig. and Pres., Calderwood's Hist.]
1596. ABRAHAM HENRYSON, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 7th Aug. 1594, pres. to the Vicarage of B. and Sannik by James VI. 19th Feb. 1596. In 1601 Kirkandrews and Sanwick were also in the charge. He went to the Assembly at Aberdeen 2d July 1605, but arrived two days after its close. Approving, however, of their proceedings, not having signed the declinature of the authority of the Privy Council in the matter, he was spared 3d Oct. from censure ; trans. to Whithorn about 1606.-[Reg. 1607. GAWEN MAXWELL, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1602. In 1636 he contributed xx li towards the building and library of that University, and continued 25th Sept. 1638.-[Mun. Univ. 1642. THOMAS WYLLIE, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 20th July 1638, called in 1641, and ord. in 1642; trans. to Mauchlin in 1646.-[Edin. Grad., Murray's Life of Rutherford, Wodrow Mss., Ayr Presb. Reg., Baillie's Lett., Reid's Ireland ii.]
1649. ADAM KAE was on trials for the par., 28th Aug. With his co-presbyters he had the boldness to keep meetings of Presbytery after they had been forbidden, on which he and four others were carried to Edinburgh in June 1662, but were allowed to return to their families for a month, "with an express charge not to preach." On 24th Feb. following he was accused before the Privy Council of " still labouring to keep the hearts of the people from the present government in Church and State," but on his appearing 24th March the case was delayed.[Dumfries Presb. 1664. WILLIAM NASMYTH, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 30th June 1658, became chaplain to the laird of Mow, and was licen. to preach the gospel by the Presb. of Kelso 26th June 1660, "except in those kirks where the ministers are not acknowledged by the Presb.;" trans. to Tarbolton in 1666.-[Edin. 1666. PATRICK SUINTOUNE, A.M., trans. from Crossmichael, adm. between 26th April and 30th Oct.; being active in persecuting the Presbyterians, it was said that an assault was made upon him in 1667. He was trans. to Swinton in the following year.-[Syn., and Edin. Reg. (Bapt.), Wodrow's Hist.]
