1791. JAMES THOMSON, A.M., descended from respectable parents in Wigtownsh., studied at the United College, and took his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1784, pres. by Geo. III. 6th Nov. 1790, and ord. 11th Aug. succeeding; died 19th March 1825, in his 72d year and 34th min., having been a person " of high respectability and worth." He marr. 16th May 1793 Dorothea, eldest daugh. of the Rev. Samuel Brown, Kirkmabreck; she died 31st Jan. 1837, and had four daugh., of whom the second, Jessie, marr. the Rev. 1825. GAVIN CULLEN, A.M., a native of Lanarkshire, licen. by the Presb. of Stranraer 15th Aug. 1821, pres. by George IV. 3d May, and ord. 17th Nov. 1825; died 18th Jan. 1844, in 51st age and 19th min. He marr., 4th June 1827, Mary, youngest daugh. of David Kennedy, Esq. of Knocknalling, and had three sons, Edward and Archibald in Australia, and David, Surgeon in the Army, and a daugh., Mary.-[Presb., and Syn. 1838. GEORGE MURRAY, son of John M., Esq. of Troquhain, born at New Galloway, became tutor in the family of the Rev. Thomas Cannan, Carsphairn, and afterwards in that of Hugh Ross of Cromarty, licen. by the Presb. 8th June 1836, pres. by Queen Victoria (the first in her reign) 2d Oct. 1837, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 8th March following; trans. to Girthon 31st Aug., and adm. 14th Sept. 1843, elected Synod Clerk 24th Oct. following; re-adm. to Balmaclellan 23d Oct. 1851. He marr., 24th Nov. 1843, Elizabeth Murray, daugh. of Mr Hyslop, farmer, Glenlee, and has seven sons and four daughters. Publications-(Two curling songs) The Broom and the Channelstane, Carle, now the Frost's come, 1854. The Bridge, 1866, and some other pieces. BALMAGHIE. The Church belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood previous to the Reformation. The parish was supplied by ROBERT CHAPMAN, reader in 1567, and ROBERT CHAMPANE, from 13th Sept. 1569 to 1586.

HEW M'GHIE, A.M., bad his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 30th July 1614, was on the Exercise at Linlithgow 8th Feb. following; on the dealing of some friends with William, Bishop of Galloway, he was adm. after 15th June 1615; continued 25th Sept. 1638.-[Reg.
