1800. GEORGE MARSHALL, son of James M., leather merchant, Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. of Glasgow 2d Nov. 1796, called 8th May, and ord. 26th June 1800, promoted to Bressay, Zetland, in 1811.-[Presb. Reg., New St. Acc. ii.]

 

HOUNDWOOD.

Built and opened in 1836, constituted as a quoad sacra parish by the Gen. Assembly 30th May 1836, and 28th May 1838, and erected as such by the Court of Teinds 9th July 1851.

 

1836. JOHN DUNCAN, licen. by the Presb. of Dunfermline 27th July 1825, unanimously appointed to Renton in 1832, ord. 15th Dec. 1836; trans. to Ceres 29th Sept. 1837.[Presb. Reg., and Review ii., New St. Acc. ii.]

 

1838. JOHN ROBERTSON, son of John R., tenant at Windshiel, licen. by the Presb. of Dunse 4th April 1825, became assistant to the Rev. Dr. Sibbald of Haddington, elected by the trustees in Feb., and ord. 11th May 1838; trans. to Whitsome, and adm. 2d Nov. 1843 ; died 27th Oct. 1865, in 66th age, and 28th min. He marr. lst, a daugh. of the said Dr Sibbald, and had a daugh., who marr. James Heriot, Esq. of Heriotbank ; 2dly, Catherine Logan, and had a son, John Alexander, who succeeded to the charge.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

LENNEL, NOW COLDSTREAM,

Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Cistercian Priory of COLDSTREAM, to which place the Church was removed in 1705, and declared to be in all time coming the parish church, 3d June 1718.

 

The parish was supplied by JOHN LYCHTBODLE, reader in 1574.

 

1576. JOHN CLAPPERTOUN, trans. from Hutton, when Simprim had also in the charge; appointed by the General Assembly same year as Visitor of Merce and Lammermuir, which was several times renewed; in 1583 he was appointed to have the district enlarged from Forth to Berwick, east of the Clyde. He was apprehended 25th May 1584 by two archers of the Guard, and taken to Edinburgh. He was charged 7th Dec. following to appear for not giving obedience to his Ordinary, and was one of those who signed an address to his Majesty on that matter. At the Assembly, 1586, he dissented against annulling the sentence which had been passed against Archbishop Adamson. While acting as one of the Commissioners of the Assembly at Edinburgh, he was charged by his Majesty, 24th Nov. 1596, to leave within twenty-four hours and attend his congregation. By the Assembly 1606 he was appointed constant Moderator of the Presb., and they were charged by the Privy Council 17th Jan. thereafter to receive him as such within twenty-four hours' after notice, under pain of rebellion. Charged by the Synod, however, to demit that office, he did so, for which he was called before the Privy Council, where he expressed his readiness to accept it of new. After this he appeared wholly submissive to the measures of the Court, till his death
