four months by the Assembly of 1642, and for three months by the succeeding one. Before the army set out for England in July 1648 he had an opportunity of preaching before his grace the Duke of Hamilton in the church of Holyrood, and seized it to express his fears that it would turn out a disastrous undertaking, saying " in a short time after going to England, that they should be affrayed at the shaking of the leafe of a tree," which was literally fulfilled by a wind arising and making such a terrible noise upon some trees that the horses in the army at Preston were put in confusion and the foot disorganized. About this tune he was thought of for the Divinity chair in Edinburgh but refused to accept it. Like others of his contemporaries he was supposed to foreknow future events, and being a strict disciplinarian be was threatened to be shot with a pair of bullets by one of his parishioners, but he died from a natural cause in the beginning of 1650, aged about 41. 1655. THOMAS WYLLIE, A.M. trans. from Mauchlin. Immediately after dispensing the Lord's Supper 8th June 1662 he was obliged to secrete himself that he might evade the authorities who were in pursuit of him for continuing to keep meetings of presbytery after the government by such had been disallowed. After various communings with Middleton the Commissioner he returned but was deprived by the Privy Council and commanded to remove "be-north Tay" 1st Oct. 1662 for disobeying the Acts of Parliament, Rot keeping the anniversary of his Majesty's Restoration, and Rot obtaining presentation and collection. While in Dundee he petitioned 3d Nov. 1664, on the indisposition of his wife, for leave to remove south of Forth which was granted in Oct. 1667, on giving a new bond for his peaceable and inoffensive behaviour, and his release was secured 4th June 1668 on giving bond to appear before the Council when called. He obtained charge of the Presbyterian congregation at Coleraine, Ireland, about 1669, but returned to Scotland, and was indulged at Fenwick in 1672.-[Dumfries, and Ayr Presb. ALEXANDER MORTIMER, brother of Mr Robert M., one of the min. of Edinburgh, licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh 3d Feb. 1667, Ares. also by him, and coll.10th Sept. following; continued 27th Nov. 1672, when he pursued for an augmentation of stipend.
