he was nominated by the Privy Council in 1589 one of the Commissioners for the preservation of true religion in the Stewartry, was a member of the Assembly 1590, and was murdered by the Mures between Nov. 1592 and Sept. 1593, aged about 32.-[Young's Life of Welsh, Reg. 1594. JOHN WELSCHE, A.M., trans. from Selkirk. He was appointed 29th March 1596 one of the visitors for Nithsdale, Annandale, Lauderdale, Eskdale, and Ewesdale; in Dec. following, while supplying the High-church Edinburgh, during the flight of its own ministers, he so offended his Majesty by his illustrations, that he was obliged to take flight also, till application was made by the Assembly 5th March same year for permitting his return to his charge. In 1599 Galtaway, Dunrod, and Kilchrist, were also in the charge. In 1600 he `vas again appointed one of the visitors to Nithsdale. He went to Ayr between Feb. and Nov. 1602. - [Reg. _Assig. Edin. 1601. ROBERT GLENDONYNG, A.M. trans. from Parton, at which time St Mary Isle and Dunrod were also in his charge. He was pres. to the Vicarage of Dunrod by James VI. 13th March 1605, and to that of Kirkcudbright 4th Jan. 1615, and was nominated by the Assembly 1606 constant Moderator of Presb. in absence of the Bishop. He was engaged by the magistrates and council 14th July 1602, with j° li " for serving the cure, and for his manse, gleib, and kirk-lands thairof." He was a member of the Assemblies 1608 and 1610, but was deprived by the Court of High Commission 1636, for refusing conformity to the Articles of the Assembly at Perth, and refusing admission to his pulpit of one who did. A warrant was then issued for his imprisonment though in his 79th year. He died in 1637 aged 80. He was one of those accounted eminent in his day for "grace and gifts or faithfulness and success." He marr. Barbara daugh. of Mr Ninian M'Clenochan, min. of Glenluce, and had two sons Robert, Town-clerk, and William, Provost of the burgh, who, for refusing to enforce the warrant against his venerable father was imprisoned, with his brother magistrates, in the jail of Wigton.-[Reg. 1638. GEORGE BUCHANAN, A.M. trans. from Moffat, appointed by Thomas Bishop of Galloway in or before 1638; deposed by the Commission, which sentence was ratified by the Gen. Assembly 26th Aug. 1639 because he declined to obey the former Assembly, and continued in contumacy. He got a warrant for 100 sterl. from Parliament on account of his suffering and loyalty, 22d May 1661.-[ War Committee of K., Peterkin's Records, Acts Parl. vii.]
1638. JOHN M'Clellan A.M. son of Michael M, burgess of the burgh., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1629. After residing at Laws in the par. of Kilbarchan he became schoolmaster at Newtonards Ireland, and was successful in preparing several young men for the University. He passed trials before ministers in the county Down, but was deposed and excommunicated by the Bishop, yet he continued exercising his gifts privately in the counties of Down, Tyrone, and Donegal, until he was in danger from the officials, when he returned to his native land; was adm. in 1638, and Bat in the Assembly that year as a member, being also in the Commissions of Assembly 1642, 1648, and 1649.He was appointed to go to Ireland for |
