SYNOD OF GALLOWAY p. 687
THE Records begin 14th May 1689, and are contained in five volumes: the only chasms being in the first volume, where one leaf is missing, (9th Sept. 1690,) and another, (19th Oct. 1704.) That of the Diocesan Synod from 25th Oct. 1664 to 27th April 1671, was discovered on a book-stall in Edinburgh by the late Principal Lee who restored it to the Synod. It has since been printed. Proposed to be erected by the General Assembly 1581, though it was adjoined to the Presb. of Nithsdale by the Assembly 15th May 1601, till such a number of churches were settled as might constitute a Presbytery. The Register begins 30th April 1700, and is contained in eleven volumes, having chasms from 1st Aug. 1733 to 2d Jan. 1734, 8th Jan. 1755 to 17th Aug. 1768, 14th Oct. 1782 to 12th May 1784, 7th Oct. 1789 to 1st Oct. 1794, 15th Aug. 1812 to 11th March 1816. Two previous volumes did exist, one from 1647 to 1658, as mentioned in the minute of Presb. 21st Dec. 1780; and the other volume beginning 10th June 1663 as mentioned in the Synod Register of the time. Neither of whom are now known to be in existence.
