1689. ALEXANDER STRANG, A.M., above-mentioned, returned, and was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, was a member of Assembly same year, but demitted "on account of old age" 15th, which was accepted 29th March 1693, and died in May 1694, aged about 76. He marr. 1st, Margaret Haitlie, and had a son, Patrick, bapt. 25th April 1658; 2dlg, in May 1658 Barbara, daugh. of Bailie Robert Richardson, Dumfries.-[Presb., Dumfries Presb., Test., Edin. 1700. THOMAS TOD, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 11th July 1687, licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 27th May 1696, his licence having been postponed from 23d Oct. preceding, as he demurred to take the oaths of allegiance and assurance. An extract of his licence was refused 31st Dec. 1696, as he scrupled to acknowledge King William as the lawful magistrate of the kingdom, but it was allowed in common form 16th March 1699, he having promised all due obedience to the civil magistrate, &c.; called 8th May, and ord. 5th Sept. 1700; he threatened separating from the Church in 1712 on account of the Oath of Abjuration, but did not, got the church rebuilt in 1720, and died 28th June 1742, in his 85th year and 42d min. He left jm merks for endowing a school, the teacher to be elected by the Kirk-Session, and also j' merks for behoof of the poor.-[Presb., Selkirk Presb., Kirkconnell Sess., Syn., and Test. Reg. 1744. WILLIAM CUNINGHAME, A.M., trans. from Mousewald, called 18th Feb., and adm. 5th April; trans. to Sanquhar 2d May 1753.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Carlyle’s Autob.]

 

1754. ROBERT GRIER, licen. by the Presb. of Kirkcudbright 12th June 1745, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover in Oct. 1753, and ord. 7th Feb. succeeding; deposed 31st May 1757, for fornication and other immoralities.-[Presb. Reg., Scots Mag. xix.]

 

1758. JOHN JOHNSTON, licen. by the Presb. of Lochmaben 27th April 1742, ord. min. to the Presbyterian congregation at Brampton, pres. to this par. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover in Oct. 1757, and adm. 20th July thereafter; died 28th Nov. 1770, in 58th age and 19th min. He marr. 24th March 1760, Jean Eskdale, who died 27th June 1782.[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst. &c.]

 

1771. JOHN M'KILL, licen. by the Presb. of Lochmaben 1st Dec. 1767, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberryand Dover in May, and ord. 26th Sept. 1771; died 18th March 1794, in 54th age and 23d min. 1794. JOHN WILLIAMSON, licen. by the Presb. 5th April 1778, and ord. by them as Chaplain at Wanlockhead 2d May 1787, pres. to this parish by William, Duke of Queensberry in Sept., and adm. 27th Nov. 1794 ; died 24th July 1816, in 30th min. He marr. 13th Nov. 1809, Jean Johnston, who subsequently marr. Mr William Rae, preacher of the gospel, and died in Feb. 1860.-[Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. (Dumf.), Tombst., &c.]

 

1817. GEORGE WALLACE, son of the Rev. James W., Keir, bapt. 29th June 1790, licen. by the Presb. 3d Oct. 1815, pres. by Charles William, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry 7th Aug. 1816, and ord. 24th April following; he was seized with sudden illness in the pulpit 17th Sept. 1854, and died within an hour, in 65th age and 38th min. His simple and retired habits, with his modest, sincere, and gentlemanly deportment rendered his loss a subject
