1607. ROBERT HENDERSON, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1598; on trials for the ministry in the Presb. of Paisley 18th May 1603; trans. to Lochmaben about 1608.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Reg. Assig., Glasg. Presb. Reg.]

 

1608. GEORGE CLELAND, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th July 1603; he gave xx li toward building the Library and College of Glasgow about 1st Aug. 1632; was a member of the Gen. Assembly 1638, and continued 18th Sept. 1650, but died before 15th Jan. 1657, aged about 74. By his latter will lie "desyred that my bookis may be equallie divided betwixt my two sons Mr John (min. of Stow) and Mr George (min. of Morton), reservand als many Inglis bookis as may serve for the use of my wife and his children." The insicbt was estimat at ij° li. He marr. Barbara Logane, who survived him, a.nd had another son, Robert.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 1658. ALEXANDER STRANG, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1639; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He had sasine of ijc xx. merks yearly, furth of the lands of Culsalmond, Craiglie, &c. 3d July 1663; was called before the Privy Council, 11th Aug. 1670, for keeping conventicles, which he positively denied having done since Martinmas preceding, affirming that he waited on ordinances every Sabbath in the parish where he lived, on which he was dismissed. He was cited before them again 11th Aug. 1677, but as nothing further appears, it is not improbable he took to teaching, as a person of his name is mentioned as schoolmaster of Canongate in 1679, who had not taken the oaths of allegiance and supremacy as required.-[Mun. 1669. GEORGE SHIELLS, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1663, he was pres. and coll. to Pencaitland in 1669, but further proceedings were stayed, that another might be settled ; trans. to Prestonkirk in 1671.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Min book Reg. Privy Seal.]

 

1679. GEORGE CLELAND, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 20th March 1671; he had "ane precept granted by the Lords of his Majesty's Exchequer upon the laird of Meldrome, and that as the pryce of an horse quhiche the rebells took from him in 1679." He died before 19th Dec. 1683, aged about 33. He marr. Jean Willan, who died before 4th Dec. 1673, and had John, Robert, Margaret, and Elizabeth.-[Edin. Grad., Test. Reg. (Dumf.)]

 

1683. JOHN ALEXANDER, trans. from Kirknewton, ousted by the people in 1689; he died at Edinburgh 16th July 1716, in 88th age. He marr. 1st Isobel, third daugh. of James, Bishop of Galloway; 2dly, Margaret Angus, who died in the Canongate after 13th Sept. 1723.
