1758. JAMES WILLIAMSON, trans. from Wamphray, pres. by Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick of Closeburn, Bart. in Oct. 1757, and adm. 29th Aug. following; trans. to Moffat 19th Nov. 1761. Having accepted the Professorship of Mathematics in the Univ. of Glasgow, the parish was declared vacant 6th Jan. 1762. He died 3d dune 1795, in 40th min.-[Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1763. PETER YORSTOUN, trans. from Kells, pres. by Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick of Closeburn, Bart. 10th June 1762, adm. 4th Aug. 1763; died 8th Dec. 1776, in his 70th year and 36th min. His learning as a scholar was accurate and extensive, and his conversation gave pleasure and delight; while in his ministerial capacity he possessed in an eminent degree all the qualities of a christian orator, and maintained a consistent and exemplary conduct, which gave efficacy to his ministrations. He marr. 29th Dec. 1746 Agnes, daugh. of Mr Andrew Ewart, min. of Kells, she died 13th May 1818, aged 93, and had four sons, Thomas, factor on the Queensberry estate, and three in the ministry, Andrew, who succeeded to the cure, James of Hoddam, and John of Torthorwald, with a daugh. Agnes, who marr. Mr Grierson of Garroch, relatives of whom now bear the name and represent the family.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., Murray's Galloway, &c.]

 

1777. ANDREW YORSTOUN, son of the preceding, trans. from Middlebie, pres. by Sir James Kirkpatrick of Closeburn, Bart. in Jan. and adm. 26th June; died 15th May 1814, in 64th age, and 40th min. He was distinguished for eloquence and ability as a preacher, and respected and esteemed for the soundness of his understanding, the gentleness of his heart, and the benevolence of his manners. He marr. 9th July 1787 Agnes Ewart, who died 19th Dec. 1806, aged 56.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. xiii.).-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., &c.]

 

1815. CHARLES ANDERSON, trans. from Gask, pres. by Charles Granville Stuart Menteath, Esq. of Closeburn in Nov. 1814, and adm. 11th May succeeding; died at Baldock, Hertfordsh., 15th July 1829, in his 51st year, and 27th min. He marr., 1st Aug. 1820, Elizabeth Hawthorn Macmillan, who died 22d Jan. 1827, aged 32.-Publication-A Statement of the experience of Scotland with regard to the Education of the People, 1825.-[Presb., and Syn. 1830. ANDREW BENNET, eldest son of the Rev. George B., min. of Strathmiglo, licen. by the Presb. of Cupar 15th Oct. 1819, tutor in the family of C. G. Stuart Menteath, Esq. of Closeburn, by whom he was pres. in Aug. 1829, ord. 4th March thereafter; had D.D. from the Univ. of St Andrews 13th May 1854. He marr. 19th Nov. 1834 Elizabeth Rimmer of Liverpool, and has two sons, George and Richard, merchants in London, and three daugh., Martha, Elizabeth, who marr.
