Previous to the Reformation the Church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso.

 

1574. JAMES RAMSAY, having Dalgarno, Kirkmaho, Kirkmichaell, and Garvale also in charge, with a stipend of lxxii li ii s. v d.; continued in 1585, and was trans, to Torthorwald in that or the following year.-[Reg. Assig., Wodrow Miscell., New St. Acc. iv.]

 

1638. ALEXANDER FLEMYNG, trans. from Morton; continued 19th Dec. 1649. He marr. 26th July 1620, Elizabeth Cockburne, of the congregation of Edinburgh.-[Commiss. to Ass. 1638, Test. (Dumf.), and Canongate Reg. (Marr.).]

 

1647. WILLIAM BLACK, A.M., cousin german of Mr Thomas Black, min. of Newtyle, had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews 5th June 1638, adm. (colleague); he had sasine of tell acres of land at the old kirk of Dunscore 27th June 1663; was deprived in 1681 for not taking the Test, but on petitioning the Privy Council was allowed till 16th March following to take it before the Archbishop. He died in March 1684, aged about 66. The insicht was estimat at xiii li vj s. viij d. and Frie geir at ixc xxxij li; Margaret Kirkpatrick, relict; his eldest son, Thomas, was served heir 25th Nov. 1687.-Publication-Description of the Presbytery of Penpont (Symson's Hist. of Galloway).-[Act. 1688. THOMAS URQUHART, had vacated before 1689, and died previous to Feb. 1694.MS. Acc. of Min. 1689, Test. Reg. (Dumf.).]

 

1693. ROBERT LAWRIE, A.M., took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in Aug. 1685, called in Nov. 1692, ord. 1st Nov. 1693; died in Dec. thereafter, in 27th age, and 1st min. -[Edin. Grad., and Presb. Reg., Tombst.]

 

1694. THOMAS LAWRIE, A.M., brother of the preceding, graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in Aug. 1686, and studied theology at that of Glasgow, called in Feb., appointed by the Presb. Jure devoluto 1st Aug., and ord. 20th Sept. 1694; deposed about 1709, for adultery, with great aggravations. He began preaching in the neighbourhood about 1712, and, holding forth powerfully against the Abjuration Oath, did not want followers.-[Edin. Grad., Mun. Univ. 1718. JOHN LAWSON, ord. 1st May; got a church built in 1741, and died 2d May 1757, in 78th age, and 40th min. He marr.
