1689. JOHN LAURIE, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow 27th July 1676, ord. Presbyterian min. at Macosquin, Ireland, called to this par. before 8th Oct. 1689, was a member of the Assembly 1690, and trans. to Auchinleck in 1692.-[Mun. Univ. 1693. JAMES MURRAY, A.M., born and educated in the bounds of the United Presb. of Chirnside, and Dunse, and licen. by them 1st Nov. 1692, having previously studied and taken his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th June 1690, called 25th May, and ord. 26th July 1693; he threatened to separate from the Church in 1713, on account of the Oath of Abjuration. His manse caught fire about 1728 by which the parochial registers were consumed. He died 2d March 1735, in his 63d year and 42d min. A superstition prevailing in the district that the water of the Black Loch was a charm for healing diseases, it was his constant practice to debar from the holy sacrament of the Lords Supper all those who engaged in such unchristian practices. He was the attached friend of Boston of Etterick, who was invited by him to Nithsdale in 1698 with a view to a charge, and probably through his influence Boston was called to Closeburn in 1716; upon Sacramental occasions they frequently assisted each other. 1736. JOHN COLLOW, brother of Mr William C. of Auchincheane &c., called 4th May, and ord. 23d Sept.; died 12th Jan. 1766, in 30th min. He marr. 18th July 1744 Lydia Tod, who died 13th Oct. 1782, and had four sons, William, Thomas, John and James.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., &c.]
1767. WILLIAM KEYDEN, tutor in the family of Mr Carlyle of Limekilns, licen. by the Presb. of Annan about 1763, became assistant to Mr George Reid, min. of Ochiltree, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry in July 1766, had a new church built in 1782, and died 20th Oct. 1796, in 60th age, and 30th min. He marr. Margaret Elliot, who died 12th Aug. 1804, and had four sons, Mr James, min. of Keir, Mr Theodore, min. of Terregles, and William, writer to the signet, and another.-Publications-A Sermon preached on the death of Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover, Dumfries 1778, 8vo. 1798. JOHN NIVISON, licen. by the Presb. 1st July 1795, pres. by the Chamberlain to William, Duke of Queensberry in May 1797, ord. 26th July 1798, the settlement having been delayed by opposition; died 3d Aug. 1832, in 70th age, and 35th min.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Acts of Ass. 1798-1801.]
1833. GEORGE SMITH, A.M., trans. from Kilmarnock, 2d Charge, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry in Jan., and adm. 9th May; trans. to Edinburgh (Tolbooth Church) 11th July, and adm. 15th Aug. 1844, had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow in 1854. He died at Waltham Abbey, Essex, 10th June 1866, in his 74th year, and 42d min., esteemed by those who adhered to his ministry, and by all with whom he came in contact. He marr., 2d Aug. 1825, Jane, only daugh. of David Hogarth, Esq. of Hilton, Berwicksh., and had Captain Frederick R.A., George Freer, Hamilton Lee, William Henry, and David Hogarth.-Publica |
