munication against Mr T. according to the advice of the Commission, and instructed their Commission to apply to the civil magistrate that effectual means be used for putting the Presb. in possession of the kirk and manse. The Assembly, 26th May 1718, appointed the Presb. to warn Air T. to abstain from his disorderly and schismatical courses, " and if he do so that they stop their proceeding, but if he continue disorderly and contumacious they appoint the Presb. to proceed to a sentence of excommunication." He left the bounds of the Presb. and resided in the parish of Eskdalemuir, but returned again to Wamphray, where he died in Nov. 1745, having survived all those who shared in his prosecution. At his funeral the attendants were met by the rebel army under the command of Lord George Murray, then proceeding to Dumfries, all of whom doffed their bonnets as they passed ; when they stopped at the church-yard, however, some horses belonging to the husbandmen were carried off by the Highlanders.-Publication-Vindication of Mr John Taylor.-[Presb., and Syn. 1744. GEORGE BARCLAY, of Middleton, licen. by the Presb. of Linlithgow 18th April 17 33, pres. by George, Marquis of Annandale, and James Johnston of Wamphray, with consent of John, Earl of Hopetoun in Oct. 1743, and ord. 29th March succeeding; trans. to Ormiston 11th Oct. 1754.-[Presb., and Syn. 1755. JAMES WILLIAMSON, licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 4th Oct. 1752, pres. by John, Earl of Hopetoun 8th March, and ord. 23d Sept. 1755; trans. to Closeburn 11th July 1758, he took possession of the manse only a short time before he left.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Sinclair's St. Acc. xxi., &c.]

 

1759. GEORGE BARCLAY, son of Mr George B., above mentioned, licen. by the Presb. 6th Aug. 1754, pres. by John, Earl of Hopetoun 26th Dec. 1758, and ord. 14th June following; trans. to Hutton and Corrie 2d March 1762.-[Presb. Reg., Sinclair's St. Acc. xxi.]

 

1763. WILLIAM BARRON, licen. by the Presb. of Edinburgh 28th April 1762, and pres. by John, Earl of Hopetoun 19th June thereafter, and ord. 10th Feb. 1763; he was proposed for North Leith in 1765 but refused to accept it, and was trans. to Whitburn 5th Feb. 1771. During his incumbency he never took up his residence in the parish, but had lodgings in Moffat, and seldom visited it except for his pulpit duty on the Lords Day.-[Presb. 1772. DAVID DONALDSON, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1755, licen. by the Presb. of Perth 27th Aug. 1766, pres. by John, Earl of Hopetoun, in Sept. 1771, and ord. 7th May succeeding; dissipated habits caused him to retire to Moffat 3d Dec. 1793, where he died 20th Jan. 1802, in 30th min. He marr. 5th March 1781 Elizabeth Martin,
