PREBBYTERY OF LOCHMABEN p. 660

 

ST MUNGO, or CASTLEMILK,

Previous to the Reformation, was a mensal kirk of the Archbishop of Glasgow. It was united to Tundergarth by Parliament 24th June 1609, but subsequently separated.

 

1575. WILLIAM HOUSTON, brother to Patrick H. of that Ilk, pres. by James VI. 3d Dec.; continued in 1585.-[Reg. Pres., and Assig.]

 

1612. DAVID ROGERS, A.M., trans. from Caerlaverock, adm. in 1612, having Tundergarth also in charge; removed to Tundergarth before 28th May 1624. He was re-adm. in 1630, and had decreet of removal served for 12 of 14 acres of kirk-land, but they still remain in possession of his successors. He marr. in Nov. 1644 Barbara Johnstoun, of the par. of Dumfries-[Reg. Assig., Durie's Dec., Man. Univ. Glasg. iii., Dumfries Reg. (Marr.).]

 

1650. ALEXANDER FORRESTER, A.M., descended from the ancient house of F. of Garden, attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1631, he bad been "ane conformist in Ireland, preached three quarters of a year in Edinburgh, and been two years with the armie," was proposed for the par. of Livingston in 1646, but the settlement did not take place, and had a recommendation from the Gen. Assembly 15th June thereafter. Refusing to conform to Episcopacy in 1662, he was confined to the parish, and apprehended for keeping a conventicle. He was also Clerk to a general meeting of Presbyterian ministers in Edinburgh 24th May 1676, was examined by the Privy Council 8th Feb. 1677, was sent to the Bass 3d Aug. after. and, after being liberated, died at Edinburgh 28th May 1686, a,ged about 75. He marr. Christian Macneil, who lived with him fifty years, and had a son William, writer to the signet. -(Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Dumfries, 'rend Lindithg. Presb., Test. (Dumf), and Edin. Reg. 167- JOHN LUMSDAINE, A.M., studied at St Leonard's College, and had his degree from the Univ. of St Andrews 26th July 1670; trans. to Dalgetty in 1680.-[Act. lied, Univ. St. And., Inform. fr. Rev. A. Jameson.]

 

1682. FRANCIS HENDERSOV, A.M., studied at St Salvator's College, and graduated at the Univ. of St Andrews 26th July 1673; continued in Oct. 1684. The church was vacant in 1689; he was Clive, however, and paid the Poll Tax in 1701. He marr. 12th Jan. 1682 Anna Blair, in the par. of Rossie, and had a daugh. Mary who marr John Kenne, writer, Aberdour. From this minister the Somervilles of Whitecroft are descended.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Rossie Sess., & Edin. Reg. (Marr.), MS. Acv. of Min. 1689, Rev. 1699. JAMES MURRAY, A. M., son of Murray of Murraythwaite, took his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th July 1694, licen. by the Presb. of Dalkeith 31st May, and ord. 5th May 1699; died in March 1735, aged about 61, in 36th min. Agnes Carruthers, his widow, had a gift of vacant stipend from the Exchequer 2 7 th July 1736.-[Edin. Grad., Sess., and Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

1736. WILLIAM FORRESTER, son of Mr James F., Min. of Culter, licen. by the Presb. of Biggar, 30th Aug. 1733, pres. by George II. in Aug. 1735, and ord. 2d Sept. 1736 ; trans. to Cairstairs 18th Aug. 1748.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg.]
