1734. JAMES M'EWEN, trans. from Johnston, pres. by the tutrix to George, Marquis of Annandale, Feb., and adm. 25th April; deposed 15th Dec. 1741, for adultery on his own confession. He appeared before the congregation, in sackcloth, on six Sabbaths, and was solemnly rebuked on each of these appearances by six of his late co-presbyters. He subsequently went to Ireland, where, in despair, he threw himself over a precipice and broke his neck, previous to 27th Oct. 1745.-[Presb., Syn., and Edin. Reg. (Bur.), &c.]
1747. EDWARD JOHNSTONE, A.M., eldest son of John J. of Gallowbanks, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 8th Jan. 1739, licen. (and was the last) by the Presb. of Middlebie 5th May 1742, pres. by George, Marquis of Annandale, 9th Aug. 1743, ord. 23d July 1747 The settlement had been delayed in consequence of a libel at the instance of certain parishioners on which he was acquitted, one of the charges being that he " caused a barber shave him on the Sabbath-day." He died 16th Jan. 1761, in his 46th year and 14th min. In person he was tall and graceful. He was superior in talents, manners, and conversation, and by his knowledge and elocution was an animated and popular preacher, as well as a zealous, diligent, and faithful pastor.-Publications-Three single Sermons, Edin. 1754-1760, 8vo. 1762. JOHN WALKER, trans. from. Glencross, pres. by the Curator for George, Marquis of Annandale, 4th March, and adm. 15th July. In 1764 he was appointed by the Gen. Assembly, and by the Commissioners of Annexed Estates, to make a survey of the Western Islands in regard to their moral and physical state and capabilities for improvement, and was requested by the Society for propagating Christian Knowledge to visit their stations, and report on the progress of their schools. He had M.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow 28th Feb. 1765, and D.D. from that of Edinburgh 22d March thereafter. A similar appointment to that of 1764 was laid on him by the Gen. Assembly 3d June 1771. He was appointed Regius Professor of Natural History and keeper of the Museum in the Univ. of Edinburgh 15th June 1779. His appointment was brought before the Presb. 5th Oct. succeeding (the ministers of Johnston, Lochmaben, Mouswald, Hutton, and Applegarth only being present), " who found the said office incompatible with his continuing min. at Moffat, and required him to attend their next meeting of Presb." Nov. 2d he forwarded a letter of excuse from Edin., dated 27th Oct. The appointment was therefore renewed, and a dissent and complaint tendered by the min. of Wamphray, to which the min. of Dalton and Kirkmichael adhered. Not compearing at their meeting 7th Dec., the Presb. delayed the consideration of the affair till next meeting. Before the sederunt was closed, however, the Dr appeared, and the minutes respecting him being read, he protested and appealed to the ensuing Synod. The whole min. of the Presb. being present, with the exception of the min. of Kirkpatrick, absent from old age, with four elders, on the 4th April 1780, the min. of Hutton moved that the Presb. put the question to Dr W., Whether he is or is not Regius Prefessor and Keeper of the Museum in the College of Edinburgh ? which |
