preventing many law-suits, while his labours as a Justice of the Peace were duly appreciated. Nor was his usefulness that merely of a minister and magistrate, he was no less skilful as an agriculturist, and he repeatedly received thanks and premiums for his suggestions towards the promotion of that necessary branch of human industry. DUNGREE, or DRUMGRIE. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. It was united for a time to Garrel, or Garvald; and afterwards to Kirkmichael, the parish was subsequently suppressed, the greater part being annexed to Kirkpatrick-Juxta, and the lesser portion to Johnston. MOFFAT. Previous to the Reformation it was one of the Prebends of Glasgow. The Parish was supplied by DAVID MAYN, reader, from 1567 to 1586.

1601. DAVID FOTHERINGHAME, A.M., was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 28th July 1596; he was authorized to preach in St Cuthberts during the will of the Presb. 23d May 1598, pres. to the Parsonage and Vicarage by James VI. 30th July 1601. He marr. 12th March 1602 Margaret Ker of Edinburgh, and had issue. His granddaugh., Sara Fotheringhame, was served heir 9th Feb. 1650.-IReg. Laur. Univ. Edin., and Pres., Edin. Presb., and Reg. 1610. WALTER WHEITFURDE, A.M., trans. from Kilmarnock, adm. before 8th June; he signed the Protestation to Parliament in support of the Liberties of the Kirk 14th June 1617, was nominated a member of the Court of High Commission 15th June 1619, and constituted minister of the ministry of Failfurd by James VI. 30th Aug. thereafter; had D.D. conferred in March 1620, and an Act of Parliament in his favour 4th Aug. 1621; it was proposed by his Majesty to translate him to Liberton in 1623, but it did not take effect. He was one of four commissioned to his Majesty in 1627 for having a better provision made for the ministry, and order taken with the Papists. He was pros. by the king to the sub-deanery of Glasgow 9th Dec. |
