1835. HUGH DOBIE studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 6th Aug. 1816, became assistant to the preceding, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch, in April, and ord. 30th July 1835. He marr. 1st, 17th Aug. thereafter Amelia, daugh. of his predecessor, and after her death he marr. again -Publication-Account of the Parish (New. St. Acc. iv.). - [Presb. Reg., &c.]

 

GARREL, PROPERLY GARVALD.

Previous to the Reformation was a mensal church of the Archbishoprick of Glasgow. The parish was supplied by THOMAS BROWN, reader, at Beltyn 1567, SIMON JOHNSTOUN from 1576 to 1580. The church was rebuilt in 1617, but no minister appears till it had, with Dungree, a minister appropriated by the Presb. of Dumfries in 1647. It was erected into a parish by the Presbytery in 1659, but the Commissioners of Teinds 22d Jan. 1662 found “that the Presbytery had proceeded most unwarrantably and illegally, and annulled the same, and declared the lands to be part of Kirkmichael."

 

1647. ALEXANDER SMITH, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d July 1637, he became schoolmaster at Dumfries, and refused a presentation to Trailflat, and was adm. 19th July 1647; trans. to Colvend in 1651.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Dumfries Reg. (Marr.)]

 

1660. WILLIAM SHAW, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1651, called between 9th Aug. and 4th Oct. 1659, and adm. 24th Jan. succeeding. Having supplied the church two years previous to his settlement he got an Act of Parliament granting the vacant stipend for that period 13th June 1661. KIRKPATRICK - JUXTA.

The Church was dedicated to St Patrick. The parish was supplied by MUNGO NEVING, reader, from 1567 till he left the office in 1569, he returned and continued from 157 6 to 1580.

 

1626. GEORGE BUCHANAN, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St Andrews in 1617, was on the Exercise in the Presb. of Glasgow 15th Nov. 1620, was here when the old manse was built in 1626, and was on the Commission for the Maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. 1634; trans. to Moffat after 29th March 1637.-[Act. 1637. DAVID WAUCHE, A.M., trans. from Moffat; died in 1653, aged about 47.-[Dumfries Presb. Reg., Commiss. to Ass. 1648, Tombst.]

 

16-. JAMES PORTER, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1651; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He was libeled at the instance of the Lord Advocate 11th Aug. 1670 for holding conventicles, and again cited
