1733. JAMES M'EWEN, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 14th July 1711, having supplied Lochmaben during the vacancy, he had a half year's stipend allowed from the Exchequer 27th Nov. 1732, pres. by the tutrix for George, Marquis of Annandale, in April, and ord. 26th Sept. 1733; trans. to Moffat 2d April 1734.-[Presb. 1734. JOHN NIMMO, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th April 1726, pres. by the tutrix for George, Marquis of Annandale, in June, and ord. 12th Sept. 1734; he was pres. to Moffat by the Commissioners for George, Marquis of Annandale, 19th and 26th May 1742. There being a considerable opposition, however, with a call in favour of another, the Synod, in Oct. 1742, finding a great many difficulties, did not judge it for the interests of religion, to come to an immediate decision, and referred it to the Commission of Assembly, who sustained the call in the following month, but his parishioners objecting to his removal, his transportation was refused by the Commission 9th March 1743. He died 29th Sept. 1784, in his 79th year, and 51st min. May Johnston, his widow, died 4th Nov. 1787.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., Morren's Ann. i., &c.]

 

1785. WILLIAM SIBBALD, son of William S., sawyer in Leith, licen. by the Presb. of Glasgow 5th May 1784, pres. by the Curator for George, Marquis of Annandale 16th June, and ord. 22d Dec. 1785; had D.D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 11th June 1800, and was trans. to Haddington 2d Charge 8th June 1808.-[Presb., and Syn. 1809. ROBERT COLVIN, D.D., a native of Sanquhar, tutor in the family of Mr Hope Johnston of Annandale, licen. by the Presb. of Edinburgh 25th Sept. 1805, had his degree from the Univ. and Marischal College, Aberdeen, pres. by James, Earl of Hopetoun, 1st Sept. 1808, and ord. 27th April succeeding ; died 4th Sept. 1851, in 73d age and 43d min. He marr. 30th Nov. 1809, Marion Laidlaw, who died 2d Sept. 1858, aged 75, and had Dr Walter Laidlaw, min. of Cramond; William, Esq. of Craigielands; Robert Francis, min. of Kirkpatrick-Juxta ; Ann, who marr. KIRKMICHAEL.

The church was dedicated to St. Michael, and supplied by THOMAS MAKGUNZEANE, reader, before Beltyn 1568, and by WILLIAM JOHNNESTOUN from 1576 to 1585.

 

1579. JOHN WATSOUN, Reader, was Ares. to the Parsonage and Vicarage by James VI. 1st July; continued in 1586.-[Reg. Pres., and Assig.]

 

1620. FRANCIS M'GILL, admitted to the Exercise (licensed) by the Presb. of Jedburgh 6th Nov. 1611, and ordained to get the half of Borthwick from the min. of Wilton by the same Presb. 10th June 1612; died 28th Feb. 1664, in his 76th year. He marr. 31st May 1620 Elizabeth M'Moran, who died 21st March 1670, aged 93, and had Margaret, and Marion, who marr. Mr William Herreis, of Harthwaite, and was served heir 6th May 1664.-(Jedburgh, and
