LITTLE DALTON.

This parish was supplied by JOHN CARRUDERS reader, from Beltyn 1567 to 1585. The place of meeting was removed to Mouswald by letter of James VI. to the Privy Council 27th May 1615, but united to Meikle Dalton 28th June 1633.

DRYFESDALE, ox DRYSDALE.

The church was dedicated to St Cuthbert, and previous to the Reformation was a mensal kirk of the Archbishoprick of Glasgow. The parish was supplied by ANDREW JOHNNSTOUN reader from 1576 to 1580.

 

1612. ALEXANDER POWRIE, A.M., studied and had his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1603, pres. by James VI. 28tb May; died previous to 26th Dec. 1616, aged about 33.[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Reg. Pres., Sec. Sigill., and Assig.]

 

1616. ROBERT HERRIS, A.M., only son of William H. merchant-burges, of Edinburgh, was laureated at the Univ. there 22d Feb. 1602, and was a preacher in 1615; pres. to the Vicarage by James VI. 24th Dec. 1616. He signed the protest in favour of the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June 1617, entered burges of Edin. 17th June 1629, continued 4th July 1661, when he obtained right to the tack duty by decree of the Lords of Council and Session, and probably remained under Episcopacy in 1662. 1678. GEORGE BROWN, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews 12th June 1652, licen. by George, Bishop of Edinburgh 25th March 1666; having made himself obnoxious by his zeal in prosecuting the Presbyterians, he was ousted by them at the Revolution. He marr. 1st, Mary daugh. of Mr John Broune, min. of Westerkirk, she died before Jan. 1688; 2dly, Elizabeth Brown, relict of Robert Scott, writer, Edinburgh, she survived him and had a daugh. 1691. SAMUEL HALLIDAY, A.M., trans. from Dunscore, called in March and adm. 1st June; was a member of the Assembly 1692, and trans. to Edinburgh (New North Ch.) in 1694.[Dumfries Presb., and Prestonpans Sess. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1692, Peterkin's Constitution of the Church.]

 

1698. JAMES SHORT, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 2d July 1684,ord. before 11th Oct. 1698; died in July 1730, in 32d min. His books were valued at jc merks.
