1794. WILLIAM WIGHTMAN, licen. by the Presb. of Lanark 30th March 17 85, pres. by the Commissioner for Charles Duncombe, younger of Duncombe Park, Roger Pettiward, and John Gustavus Le Maitre, Esquires, proprietors of Holmains 11th Dec. 1793, ord. 8th May thereafter; died 31st Oct. 1800, in 43d age, and 7th min. He marr. 1st, 4th Dec. 1794 Jean Newall, who died 29th March 1795; 2dly, in 1797 Nicholas Denham, who died 23d Aug. 1847.-[Presb., and Test. Reg. (Dumf.) &c.]
1801. JAMES CRIRIE, A.M., born at Newabbey in April 1752. After the death of his father lie was employed as a cattle herd, and having a predeliction for occupying his spare time in reading, he was encouraged by the min. of Kirkgunzeon (Mr Clark) with useful books, by which lie was in some respects self-taught. Mr Clark then recommended him to a school, whence he removed to another in the neighbouring par. of Lochrutton, where he conducted himself so respectably, that he was advanced to be master of the grammar-school of Wigton in May 1777, and to that of Kirkcudbright in Nov. 1781. After a competitive trial he was promoted to the Rectorship of the High School Leith in Nov. 1 7 87, where he introduced, what has been so much applauded since, the Monitorial system, and had A.M. conferred by the Univ. of Edinburgh 16th March 1790, and was licen. by the Presb. there 30th March 1791. From Leith he was promoted to be one of the masters in the High School Edinburgh 18th March 17 95. He was pres. to this par. by the Commissioner for the proprietors of Holmains 22d April, and ord. 17th Sept. 1801; had D.D. from the foresaid Univ. 26th Feb. 1802, and died 5th Jan. 1835, in his 83d year, and 34th min. Besides the knowledge of languages necessary to his profession, be had also acquired others, especially those of France and Spain. He was admitted a Fellow of the Society of Scottish Antiquaries 22d Dec. 1795, and filled their office of Latin Secretary from Dec. 1799 to Nov. 1815. He marr. 1823. THOMAS HUNTER THOMSON, licen. by the Presb. of Annan 7th Dec. 1815, pres. by James Charles Macrae, Esq. of Holmains 4th Dec. 1822, and ord.
