1657. WILLIAM BOYD, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1632; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662. He had a son Hugh bapt. 24th Dec. 1657.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Wodrow's Hist., Dumfries Reg. (Bapt.).]
1665. JOHN ROWAT, held a bursary in the Univ. of Glasgow in 1657 , was a student of theology in 1664; and probably adm. about 1665, demitted prior to the Revolution.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., MS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]
1694. HUGH M'HENDRIE, adm. before 11th Oct.; deposed in 1696, for irregularities, this sentence was taken off by the Gen. Assembly 30th Jan. 1699, upon his application, and engagement to be subject to the judicatories of the Church; and appointed 3d Feb. after to go and supply in Angus or Perth. Again deposed by the Commission of Assembly in 1700, for irregular and divisive courses. The Assembly 15th March 1703, refused to take off the Sentence of the Commission, but recommended all presbyteries south of Tay to collect for his present necessity. He went to England, put on the surplice, and returning afterwards was apprehended in Glasgow for celebrating an irregular marriage, when he declared himself to belong to the Episcopal Communion.-[Penpont, and Dumfries Presb., Syn., and Sess. 1703. JOHN CARLYLE, A.M., studied and was laureated at the Univ. of Edin. 28th June 1697, called in Oct. 1702, and ord. 29th April succeeding; continued in 1710, and subsequently demitted. Having discharged a party from a fine incurred for an irregular marriage, it was found by the Lords of Session, 7th Dec. 1705 that he could not do so. 1715. ROBERT KIRKLAND, studied theology at the Univ. of Glasgow, and licen. by the Presb. there 1st June 1709, ord. by the Presb. in London before 16th April 1712, adm. before 11th Oct. 1715; demitted 6th May, which was accepted 5th Aug. 1740.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Presb., and Syn. Reg.]

DAVID IMRIE, A.M., studied at St Salvator's College, graduated at the Univ. of St Andrews 5th May 1730, and had an Exchequer bursary 9th July following, became chaplain in the family of Johnston of Westerhall, licen. by the Presb. of Middlebie 27th Oct. 1736, pres. by the Tutors for John Carruthers of Holmains 16th Jan., and 26th Jan., and ord. 7th May 1741; trans. to St Mungo 17th May 1751.-[Act. 1763. WILLIAM BRYDEN, licen. by the Presb. of Annan 3d Feb. 1762, pres. by John Carruthers, Esq. of Holmains, 30th July following, ord. 24th March 1763. Had D.D. from the Univ. of Edinburgh 19th March 1778. A libel was raised against him by the heritors, elders, and a great number of heads of families on various charges in 1782, but after a vexatious and tedious litigation, in which the Dr. ably defended himself, the Assembly only found 29th May 1788, upon his own acknowledgment, "that he has upon several occasions, and in the heat of passion, uttered expressions irreverent towards Almighty God, and unbecoming the character of a clergyman," and appointed their moderator (Principal Davidson) to give him a sharp re- |
