1746. EDWARD M'WHINNIE, licen. by the Presb. 5th April 1737, nominated by the Commissioners for Sir Alexander Jardine of Applegarth 9th and 21st June, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 20th Nov. 1746; died 5th Jan. 1776, in 30th min. He marr. 7th Aug. 1751 Jean Bell, who died 30th March 1799.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1777. ROBERT LITTLE, pres. by the Curator for George, Marquis of Annandale, in June 1776, and ord. 27th March succeeding; died 5th Jan. 1803, in his 59th year, and 26th min. He marr. 9th Dec. 1783, Ann, daugh. of Mr Matthew Cleghorn, min. of Dryfesdale, she died at Edinburgh 15th July 1823.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., &c.]

 

1804. THOMAS TUDOR DUNCAN, M.D., youngest son of the Rev. George D., min. of Lochrutton, born 24th June 1776, attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh (after having been licen. by the Presb. of Annan 8th June preceding) in Oct. 1803; pres. by Sir William Jardine of Applegarth, Bart., 29th Dec. following, ord. 12th April 1804; trans. to Dumfries (New Church) 4th Nov. 1806.-[Presb. 1807. WILLIAM DUNBAR, tutor in the family of M'Neill of Colonsay, licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries 3d Jan. 1804, pros. by James, Earl of Hopetoun-, and by Sir William Jardine of Applegarth, Bart., in Jan., and ord. 7th May 1807, had D.D. from the Univ. of St. Andrews 12th Jan. 1839, was solicited to be Moderator of the General Assembly, which he respectfully declined, and died 6th Jan. 1861, in his 82d year, and 55th min. He marr. 15th Jan. 1810, Anne, fourth daugh. of the Rev. Dr Burnside of Dumfries, and had William Burnside D., min. of Glencairn, and several daughters.-Publications-Naturalist's Library, XXXVIII., (The Natural History of Bees, with the exception of twenty-one pages), Edin. 1840, fcp. 8vo. SIBBALDBYE.

The church, previous to the Reformation, belonged to the Canons of Jedburgh. It was united to Applegarth by Parliament 24th June 1609.

DALTON.

This parish was supplied by JOHN CONYNGHAM, reader, in 1567, and by HARBERT WELSCHE, from 1576 to 1585. It was united to Little Dalton by Parliament 24th June 1609; this union, however, was dissolved, and the kirks of Meikle and Little Dalton disjoined from Mouswald, by a Commission from Parliament, 28th June 1633.

 

1637. JOHN HENRISON, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1617; he gave xl Ii. toward building the Library of the Univ. of Glasgow 25th May 1637. Elizabeth Rome, his relict, died 4th Jan. 1708.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Commis. to Ass. 1638, Mouswald Sess., and Dumfries Reg. (Deaths).]
