[On the occurrence of the vacancy three presentations were issued by competing patrons, which, with consent of parties, were, by the Assembly of 20th May 1723, referred to the Commission, who ordered the Presb. to try the inclinations of the people, and report. There was a vast majority in favour of Mr Carlyle, min. of Cummertrees, who, on a petition from the parishioners, had been pres. by his Majesty, but the Presb. not seeming anxious for his appointment invited Mr Edward Buncle, A.M., who studied and had his degree from the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th April 1713, was licen. by the Presb. of Dunse 2d May 1721, and was now officiating as preacher or catechist at Leadhills. He was called 17th Aug., and ord. 27th Sept. 1723, but his settlement -was declared null and void by the Commission 13th Nov. following, and the Presb. was ordained to proceed to the admission of Mr Carlyle, and, in case of their refusal, the Synod was empowered, on the application of the people, to do so by a committee of their number. This was done 10th March 1724. Party strife ran so high on the occasion as almost to threaten a division of the Church, and was only quashed by the Assembly finding, 22d May following, that the Commission had exceeded their powers, and on the 25th, for the quieting of the parish, setting aside the whole proceedings, and ordering a new call to be moderated, that the true choice of the people might be undoubtedly known,- the Lord Advocate Dundas signifying his hope that "his Majesty would not insist on his presentation in opposition to what should be the choice of the parish." The Presb. were reproved, and the Synod recommended to bury all the heats this affair had created, and both advised not to enter any papers not already recorded, that all memory of the differences that had arisen about this affair might be utterly extinguished.-Reg. Lauer. Univ. Edin., Wodrow's Anal., and Corresp., Acts of Ass. 1723, 1724, &c.] |
