PRESBYTERY OF LOCHMABEN p. 640
Proposed to be erected by the General Assembly April 1581, but does not appear till 26th Sept. 1638, when members were elected for the coming Assembly. The Register only commences 23d June 1701, and is contained in seventeen volumes. The first, having been recovered out of a snuff-shop, is very imperfect, only a hundred and eighteen leaves out of a hundred and eighty-seven being recovered. The blanks occurring afterwards are from 26th May 1706 to 4th Nov. 1730, 1st July 1746 to 26th Oct. 1747, 13th April to 3d Aug. 1773, 7th Aug. 1781 to 1st Oct. 1782. Two other volumes are mentioned in a minute 2d March 1779, one from 17th March 1708 to 30th Sept. 1718, and another from 28th April 1719 to 24th July 1722, but they are not known now to exist.
LOCHMABEN. The church was dedicated to Mary Magdalene.
1567. JAMES MAXWELL, son of John M., entered in Nov. with a stipend of xliiij li. viiijs. xd. In 1574 Apilgirth, Dryvisdale, Castlemilk, and Tonnourgarth were also in the charge.[Reg. Min., and Assig., Test. Reg., Wodrow Miscell.]
1576. ALEXANDER GARDINARE, having the same charge except Castlemilk; continued in 1580, and removed to Kirkmahoe prior to 1585.-[Reg. Assig.]
1595. WILLIAM JOHNSTOUN, A.M., one of the original students at the Univ. of Edinburgh, where he was laureated in Aug. 1587, pres. by James VI. before 13th May 1592; he craved collation from the Presb. of Edinburgh 8th July 1595, as "he durst not repair to Dumfries through the deadlie feuds between the Maxwells and Johnstons," to which they agreed 23d Sept., and accordingly he was adm. 30th of same month; murdered 4th March following, about the age of 29. Sir James Johnestoun of Dunskellie, knight, was denounced 21st May 1596 for not presenting five clansmen to answer "tuiching the shamefull, cruell, and vnmercifull slaucher of Mr W. 1595. JOHN JOHNSTOUN, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1584, pres. by James VI. 8th March; died before 1st Feb. 1607, aged about 43.-[Man. Univ. Glasg. iii., Reg. Pres., Booke of the Kirk.]
