1785. JOHN LAURIE, son of the Rev. James L., min. of Hawick, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 9th Dec. 1767, became Chaplain at Caerlanrig, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 17th Dec. 1784, and ord. 28th July thereafter; trans. to Ewes 14th Sept. 1791.-[Presb. Reg.]
1792. WILLIAM BROWN, licen. by the Presb. of Stirling 3d Aug. 1791, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch, 26th Jan., and ord. 3d May 1792. Had D.D. from the Univ. and Marischal College Aberdeen 14th Dec. 1816, and died 21st Sept. 1835, in his 69th year and 44th min. He marr. 28th April 1797 Margaret Moffat, who died 23d July 1855, and had James, lieutenant, 10th Nat. Infantry, H.E.I.C.S. Madras, John, student at the Univ. of Edinburgh, and Janet.-Publications-Antiquities of the Jews, 2 vols. 1836. ADAM CUNNINGHAM, licen. by the Presb. of Selkirk 28th June 1831, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, in Nov. 1835, and ord. 12th May following; trans. to Crailing 14th, and adm. 28th Sept. 1843.-[Presb. Reg.] EWES. The Church was dedicated to St. Cuthbert. There was also another at Ewis-duris, or Over-Ewis, which, ever since the Reformation, has been joined with Nether-Ewis.
1627. WILLIAM GRAHAME, A.M., had his degree from the Univ. of St. Andrews 29th July 1611; died after 27th Sept. 1638.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Kirk Pap., Commiss. to Ass. 1638, Macfarlane MSS.] CHISHOLM, died.-[Macfarlane MSS.]
1646. JOHA LITHGOW, transplanted from Ireland, and authorised to exercise in the ministry here previous to 25th Jan. 1646, and adm. 21st April succeeding. Refusing to conform to Episcopacy he " was discharged to preach 13th Nov. 1664, by James Murray, messinger, upon the Lords day, immediately after his coming from the pulpit, in the middest of the kirk floore, before George Dickson and William Chisholme, elders, and did intimat to him in the said place and day that he was suspended from the function of the ministry, and delyvered to him a copy of the said Act of Suspension."
