1801. DAVID SCOTT, licen. by the Presb. 3d Oct. 1797, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch 11th April, and ord. 11th Aug. 1801; died 7th Jan. 1822, in 56th age and 21st min. Devout and liberal in his sentiments, he was faithful and zealous in the discharge of duty, particularly in promoting the religious education of youth, while he was a friend to the poor, and ever accessible for direction and advice. 1822. ANGUS BARTON, born in parish of Morton, became assistant in the Library of the Univ. of Edinburgh, pres. by Walter Francis, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, with consent of his curators, in Feb., and ord. 26th Sept.; had D.D. from the Univ. of Glasgow in May 1856, and died 19th April 1861, in his 76th year and 39th min.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iii.-[Presb. ESKDALEMUIR.

Originally part of Westerkirk, and erected in 1702. It is the largest parish in the county, being in length eleven and a half, and in breadth about eight miles.

 

1703. JOHN LAWRIE, A.M., trans. from Wauchope, called by the Presb. jure devoluto 23d June, and adm. 8th July; died 7th Dec. 1723, in 69th age and 33d min. It was said of him "Here lies John Lawrie, Neither rich nor poor, Last minister of Wauchope, And first of Eskdalemoor." -[Presb. Reg., Tombst., &c.]

 

1724. JAMES M'GARROCH, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow 29th March 1714, licen. by the Presb. of Linlithgow 10th April 1723, called 23d April, and ord. 26th Aug. 1724; died 11th Aug. 1761, in his 69th year and 37th min. He marr. 1st Aug. 1726 Elizabeth, second daugh. of Dr. Thomas Alston, physician of Athelwood; she died 10th March 1781, leaving issue.-[Mun. Univ. Glasg. iii., Presb., Abercorn Sess., and Syn.
