The settlement was delayed in consequence of having been violently opposed by Lord Minto (Sir Gilbert Elliot). The Presb. 3d July 1750 "found they could not now take the opposition under consideration, unless for some matter of life or doctrine. As to using his notes when he preached, there was no law of the Church against it, and it was practised by several ministers of the best character It was no wonder he had not obeyed some of the Presbytery's appointments to preach at Castletown, for he had threatening letters sent him, and had been insulted by a mob." In 1759 he was obliged to employ a preacher, and afterwards a minister as assistant, but he got a translation to Ashkirk (which gave satisfaction to the parishioners) 1st Feb. 1763.-[Presb. Reg.]
