1784. JOHN RUSSELL, trans. from Eskdalemuir, pres. by Henry, Duke of Buccleuch, in June, and adm. 6th Aug.; died 19th July 1814, in his 70th year, and 41st min. He marr. 1st and had a daugh. Margaret Helen, who marr. John Elliot, Esq. of Cooms; 2dly, 4th Jan. 1786, Elizabeth Russell, who died 9th March 1812, and had a daugh. Ann, who marr. 1815. JAMES DONALDSON, a native of Galloway, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, where he was employed as Assistant Librarian in the College. Library, licen. by the Presb. of Kirkcudbright 1st Jan. 1812, pres. by Charles William, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry in Nov. 1814, and ord. 13th April following; died at Edinburgh 20th Aug. 1854, in 75th year and 40th min. He marr. 14th Feb. 1815 Ann Hathorn, daugh. of Campbell Wilson, Esq., supervisor of Excise, and had two sons, John, min. of Kirkeonnel, and James, M.D., surgeon, H.M. Indian Service, and six daughters, Mary, Elizabeth marr. the Rev. Thomas Morison, Methil, Jane marr. Mr Kerr, Calcutta, Isabella, Ann, Agnes marr. William Strathan, Esq., H.M. Stationery Office, London.-Publication-Sermon preached at Canonbie July 30, 1854, Edin. 1855, 8vo.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

CASTLETON.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh. Being " destitute of all instruction and bringing up in the fear of God be lack of pastoris to preach the Word sen the Reformation of religion and letteris, his Majesty under the great seal, with advice, united and annexed in ane parsonage and vicarage the kirks of Cassilton, Ettiltoun, Quhele-kirk, and Belkirk, in ane perpetual Rectory, or parsonage and vicarage of Cassilton, 9th Dec. 1604." The largest parish in the south of Scotland being upwards of eighteen miles long by twelve broad.

 

[RICHARD THOMSON, min. of Ratho, was Ares. by James VI. 9th and 31st Dec. 1604. 1607. THOMAS BANNATYNE, A.M., son of Mr Thomas B. of Newtyld, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 7th Aug. 1594, pres. by James VI. (to the vicarage of Ratho 23d Oct, 1606, to which fie was Dot collated) 18th Nov. 1606, and 3d Sept. following, by the Lord Collector (Sir Gideon Murray) in Nov. 1606, and by Walter, Lord Scott of Buccleuch in April following, but the Presb. 22d of that month, refused to give collation, because the promise made by Sir Gideon Murray was Dot performed.
