1685. SIMON WYLD, trans, from Hilton, adm. about 1685, remained three years, and went to Ireland. He died abroad previous to 17th June 1715.-[Macfarlane MSS., Test. Reg.]
1691. JOHN LAWRIE, A. M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1671, adm. 10th Sept. 1691, was a member of Assembly in 1692, and trans. to Eskdalemuir in July 1703. -[Edin. Grad., Presb., and Syn. Reg., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1692.]
MORTON. Was in the list of parishes 1574 and 1586, but suppressed and annexed to Canonbie and Wauchope, in the latter of which a chapel was built at HALF-MOERTON about 1703. After the erection of Langholm, it continued to be supplied every fourth Sunday by the min. of that parish, till 1825, when it got into disrepair. After being before several assemblies, they recommended its disjunction 2d June 1834, and it was accordingly erected into a separate parish by the Court of Teinds 6th March 1839. CANONBIE. The church was dedicated to St Martin, and previous to the Reformation belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh.
1609. JOHN DOUGLASS, A.M., trans. from Longformacus, pres: to Wauchope and C. by James VI. 1st Sept.; the Presb. of Jedburgh 20th following proposed to remember his planting to the Synod "to the great sclander of the kirk." In 1615 he had also Morton in addition, to which he was pres. by Charles I. 2d April 1635, he was served heir to a brother James 4th April 1639, and died before 31st Jan. 1653.-[Reg., Pres., and Assig., Jedburgh, and Melrose Presb. 1644. JOHN BELL, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1634; probably trans. to Middlebie about 1649.-[Act.. Rect. Univ. St And., Jedburgh Presb. Reg.]
1649. DAVID LAYNGE, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1643; continued 13th May 1679, when a resignation of Woodend was made in favour of himself and his son John ; he died at Edinburgh 20th March 1692, aged about 69.-[Act Rect. DAVID HEDDERWICK, A.M., studied at St Salvator's College, and took his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews 30th Nov. 1683; deprived by the Privy Council 19th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, not praying for their majesties William and Mary, and for saying, in a deriding manner, that the surrender of the Castle of Edinburgh made a great noise. In 1714 he rendered himself liable to the pains of the Act of Parliament |
