to Dr. Isaac Watts; resided for a while in and had a testimonial from the Presb. of Kirkcaldy. On an almost unanimous petition, the Presb. proceeded with a call 15th Nov. 1716, he was also pres. by George I. in Dec., and ord. 9th May thereafter; on account of bodily infirmity, he demitted (reserving £40 yearly for his support), which was accepted 1st Dec. 1746, and died 17th July 1757, aged about 76, in 41st min. He marr. 1st Nov. 1726, Julia, daugh. of Mr Thomas Henderson of Ploughlands, in the par. of Dalmeny, and had four sons, Thomas, George, William, born 28th Sept. 1735, remembered for his poetical genius, and as the translator of the Lusiad of Camoens, Jean, Margaret, and others.-[Edin. 1748. JOHN DICKIE, trans. from Dunscore, called 17th Sept. 1747, and adm. 21st Jan. thereafter; demitted 12th Oct. 1790, and died 9th Feb. 1800, aged 91, in 63d min. He was a person of considerable vigour of mind, very sanctimonious in his manners, yet with a desire of being thought free and liberal in his sentiments.-[Presb. 1791. THOMAS MARTIN, A.M., trans. from Castletown, pres. by George III. 23d March, and adm. 11th Aug.; died at Edinburgh, where he had gone to attend the Assembly, 29th May 1812, in his 59th year and 22d min. During a discussion on the translation of passages of Scripture, and an addition to the Psalmody, he waggishly observed they should not omit the members of the musical presbytery-Mr Sing-ers of Fa-la, Mr Sangster of Hum-bie, Mr Pyper, of Pen-cait-lan, and Dr Lo-ri-mer of Had-din-ton.-Publication-Account of the Parish (Sinclair's St. Acc. xiii., xxi.).-[Presb., and Syn. 1812. WILLIAM BERRY SHAW, trans. from Roberton, pres. by Charles William, Duke of Buccleuch and (aueensberry 17th July, and adm. 6th Nov. The chapel getting into disrepair, the Presb., 9th March 1825, dispensed with Mr Shaw's services at Halfmorton, which led to the erection of a new parish in 1839. Mr S. died 17th June 1856, in his 81st year and 55th min. He marr. 25th March 1813 Eliza youngest daugh. of Mr Henry Scott, Deloraine, and had three sons, George, William, and Henry, and three daugh., Margaret, Jane, and Elizabeth.-Publications-Five single Sermons, Hawick 1810,-Carlisle 1835, 8vo. WAUCHOPE.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Priory of Canonbie, which was a cell of the Abbey of Jedburgh. It had been united to Canonbie by Act of Parliament before 1st Sept. 1609; but was again disjoined. It was suppressed, however, and united to Stapel-Gorton in 1702.
