PRESBYTERY OF LANGHOLM p. 628

 

Erected, on the dissolution of that of Middlebie, with the addition of Castleton from that of Jedburgh by the General Assembly 21st May 1743. The Register of their proceedings begins 9th Nov. 1743, and is contained in four volumes, including the second volume of those of Middlebie beginning 23d June 1703, and ending 30th Jan. 1717, which the Presb. hold by special agreement, in two of which there are several blanks, one of them extending from 5th May 1762 to 18th Nov. 1778.

 

STAPEL-GORTON, Now LANGHOLM.

Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. On the union of Wauchope in 1702 the church was removed, and the name changed to Langholm.

 

1612. ARCHIBALD GIBSONE, A.M., formerly of Dunscore, pres. by James VI. 4th April; died in 1657, aged about 78.-[Reg. Pres., and Assig., Macfarlane MSS., Kirk Pap.]

 

1657. ROBERT LAW, A. M., descended, from the family of Lawsbridge, Ayrsh, attained his degree at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1646, became assistant to the preceding; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June, and of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1662.-[Mun. 1664. MATTHEW REID, A.M., probably son of Mr Matthew Reid, min. of Kirkinner, had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th July 1659; while attending the divinity class there he had a legacy of jc merks from Mr James Reid, min. of St. Cuthberts, passed trials before the Presb. of Stirling, and was recommended 21st Sept. 1664 for licence, adm. same year; trans. to Hoddam in 1666.-[Edin. 1673. ROBERT ALLAN, A.M., son of Mr Thomas A., min. of Wauchope. graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1665; deprived by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, and died in 1720, aged about 75.-[Edin. Grad., Test. Reg. (Dumf), MacFarlane MSS.]

 

1688. ROBERT LAW, A.M., above mentioned, returned in 1688, was restored by the Act of Parliament 25th April 1690, was a member of the Assembly that year, and of that in 1692; died 8th April 1702, in his 72d year. He was a pious, learned, wise, judicious, and moderate man, while he was also a cheerful sufferer for religion. He marr. 22d Sept. 1657, Marion Meiklejohne, of Temple, who spent her time in doing good, and died 9th Jan. 1694. A son Robert was a doctor of medicine, and a daugh. Elizabeth marr. Sir John Haliburton, knight.[Macfarlane MSS., Dumfries Presb., anal Humbie Sess. Reg., Tombst., Reg. Gen. Ass. 1690, 1692.]

 

1706. DAVID GRAHAM, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 6th March 1700, called 12th Dec. 1705, and ord. 26th March following; trans. to Kirkmaho 11th April 1716.-[Presb. Reg., Macfarlane MSS., Sinclair's St. Acc. xxi.]

 

1717. ALEXANDER MEIKLE, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th April 1701, licen. by five ministers at London 27th July 1704, and was sometime assistant
