1675. ROGER LAUSONE, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 27th July 1663 outed by the people, at or before the Revolution, on which he went to England, and is said to have hanged himself in 1697, aged about 54. Janet Carlyle, relict.-[Edin. Grad., Test. Reg. (Dumf.), MS Acc. of Min. 1689.]

 

1694. WILLIAM AIKMAN, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 9th July 1688, ord. before 9th Oct. 1694; died 3d Sept. 1718, in his 55th year and 24th min.[Edin. Grad., Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg., (Dumf.), Tombst., &c.]

 

1720. JAMES ARMESTRONG, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 4th Nov. 1719, pres. by the Presb. jure devoluto-, and ord. 7th July 1720, elected Synod-Clerk in 1738, and died 17th July 1759, in 70th age and 39th min. 1783. JOHN CRAIG, trans. from Kirkpatrick Fleming, pres. by the Commissioner for David, Viscount Stormont, in April, and adm. 12th June; died 16th Dec. 1798, in his 62d year and 35th min. He marr. 5th Oct. 1767 Barbara daugh. of Mr Alex. Orr, min. of Hoddam, she died 5th Jan. 1804, and had a son Alexander, factor to Murray of Broughton, and a daugh. 1799. HENRY DUNCAN, third son of the Rev. George D., Lochrutton; his education was begun at the manse under private tuition, and afterwards completed at an academy at Dumfries, and at the Univ. of St. Andrews, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, at the latter of which he was associated with Leyden, Gillespie, and Lundie, in the study of theology, and joining the Speculative Society, was enrolled with Brougham, Horner, and Petty, afterwards Marquis of Landsdowne; licen. by the Presb. of Dumfries 7th Aug. 1798, pres. by the Commissioner for William, Earl of Mansfield, 17th May, and ord. 19th Sept. 1799. Had D.D. from the Univ. of St. Andrews 17th Nov. 1823, and was elected Moderator of the General Assembly 16th May 1839. On adhering to the Protest, joining in the Free Secession, and signing the deed of Demission, he was declared no longer a min. of this Church 24th May 1843, and died 19th Feb. 1846, in his 72d year and 47th min. In this active, benevolent, and indefatigable min. the Church lost a valuable member, whose unwearied endeavours were directed to promote her extension and usefulness. He superintended the education of many young gentlemen in the manse with that of his own family; and be formed an Auxiliary Bible Society in Dumfries n Feb. 1810. His fame will be best known, however, as the FOUNDER of Parish or Savings Banks, to which he was partly led from having spent a year or two (in the midst of his studies) in a banking-house at Liverpool. The first of these he established in this parish May 1810. (In the end of 1853 no fewer than forty-five existed in Scotland, with deposits of £1,837,103; and in the United Kingdom of £33,227,394). He marr. 1st 9th Sept. 1805, Agnes, the surviving daugh. of his predecessor, she died 28th Jan. 1832, and had two sons, George John Craig, min. of Kirkpatrick-Durham, and William Wallace, min. of Cleish, and one daugh., Barbara Anne, who marr. in 1843 the Rev. James Dodds, min. of Humbie, now of the Free Church, Dunbar.
