1695. ROBERT BICHET, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 3d July 1693, became schoolmaster of Tyningham, ord. prior to 8th Oct. 1695; died in June 1742, aged about 69, in 47th min.-(Reg. Laur. Univ. Edin., Presb., Dunbar Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg., (Dumf.)

 

1744. JOHN LAURIE, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 8th March 1722, licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 2d June 1731, pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry in Jan. and ord. 6th Sept. 1744; died 27th Sept. 1762, in his 60th year, and 19th min. Anna Bell, his relict, died 28th May 1797, aged 85. There was at least one son.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. (Dumf.), &c.]

 

1763. JAMES CURRIE, trans. from Kirkpatrick-Fleming, and adm. 15th Sept.; died 24th Oct. 1773, in 58th age, and 28th min. He marr. in June 1753 Jean daugh, of Mr Robert Boyd, writer, Dumfries, she died in 1769, and had a son James, M.D., highly appreciated as a physician at Liverpool (who edited the works of our national Poet Burns, and generously contributed to the support of his bereaved family), and six daughters.-(Tombst., Duncan's MS. 1774. ANDREW YORSTON, eldest son of Mr Peter Y., min. of Closeburn, licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 5th Feb. 1772, ord. 18th Aug. 1774; trans. to Closeburn 16th May 1777.-[Trustees Reports, &c.]

 

1778. JAMES YORSTOUN, brother of the preceding, licen. by the Presb. of Penpont 5th July 1775, ord. 23d March 1778; trans. to Hoddam 9th June 1784.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1785. ABRAHAM NIVISON, son of a farmer near Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, became tutor in the family of Wemyss of Wemyss, licen. by the Presb. of Kirkcaldy 31st July 1782, pres. by William, Duke of Queensberry, in 17 84, ord. 28th April 1785; died 12th March 1809, in 57th age, and 24th min. He marr. 17th July 1787 Elizabeth eldest daugh. of Mr Rich. Brown, min. of Lochmaben, she died at Edinburgh 14th Nov. 1838, and had four sons, Alexander, min. of Roberton, Richard, who subsequently became min. of M., and William Brown, min. in Amsterdam, James, surgeon in the army, and a daugh. who marr. 1809. WILLIAM HUNTER, licen. by the Presb. of Ayr 26th Sept. 1798, became a teacher in Dumfries, pres. by William, Duke of Queensberry in March, and ord. 27th July 1809; died 5th April 1819, aged 49, in 10th min. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of Mr Hope, farmer, near Elvanfoot, she died 25th March 1842, and had four sons, of whom William became min. of BaIdernock, and a daughter.-[Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. 1820. RICHARD NIVISON, second son of Abraham N., mentioned above, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, and became tutor in the family of Mr Baird of Newbyth, licen. by the Presb. of Dunbar 1st April 1812, pres. by the Trustees for Francis, Duke of Buccleuch, in Sept. 1819, and ord. 10th March following; died 24th Jan. 1858, in his 68th year, and 38th min. He marr. 1st 8th Sept. 1823 Nancy Davidson, daugh. of Mr Irving of Newbie, M.P., she died 13th Sept. 1825, and had a daughter; 2dly, 24th Nov. 1840 Elizabeth daugh. of Mr Davidson of Cushathill, and had two sons and two daughters.-Publication-Account of the Parish (New St. Acc. iv.)-[Presb., and Syn.
