PRESBYTERY OF CHIRNSIDE p. 425

 

Proposed to be erected by the General Assembly 1581. The Register begins 7th Aug. 1690, and extends to eight volumes, the only blank occurring from 7th Jan. to 27th March 1694.

 

CHIRNSIDE

Previous to the Reformation, the church was a Prebend of the Collegiate Church of Dunbar. The parish was supplied by NINIAN FAIRMAN, reader from 1567 to 1578.

 

1578. THOMAS STORIE, translated from Foulden, when Bonkle and Preston formed also part of the charge; continued in 1580, and was re-trans. to Foulden about 1585.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1585. -----------CRANSTOUN, in 1590 the parsonage was vacant by his non-residence.-[Reg. Assig.]

 

1593. DAVID HOME, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1588, continued 10th Nov. 1602, when he was a member of Assembly; Trans. to Greenlaw before 1606.-[Reg. Laur Univ. Edin., and Assig., Booke of the Kirk, Test. Reg.]

 

1607. ALEXANDER SMYTH, pedagogue for many years to the bairns of Robert Logan of Restalrig, who was an accessory to the Gowrie conspiracy. In June 1609 he was a witness in the trial of forfeiture for high treason against Robert L., eldest son of the deceased conspirator, and was then aged thirty. Re was called before the court of High Commission in 1620, anal continued 3d June 1645. He marr., previous to June 1609, Janie Craw, who died in Nov. 1635, and had a son and three daugh., John, Margaret, Euphan, and Marie.-[Reg. Assig., anal Old Dec. iv. &c., Cromarty's Hist. 1645. PATRICK SMITH, A.M., acquired his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d July 1637; along with the preceding; he had been suspended, which sentence was approved by the Gen. Assembly in July 1649.-[Edin. Grad., Kirk Pap., Peterkin's Records.]

 

1659. WILLIAM GALBRAITH, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Glasgow in 1647, called unanimously to Bothkennar before 21st July 1654, but though “a good young man, ane order comes from the English to hinder his plantation in that parish." Conforming to Episcopacy, he was coll. 25th Nov. 1662; and to Tranent 15th Dec. 1665 (but there was no farther proceeding on it); Trans. to Morebattle alter 26th July 1668, though he is mentioned here in Feb. 1669. -[Mun. 1669. JAMES LAWTIE, son of Alexander L. of Killhill, pres. by April, coll 12th, and adm. 26th Aug; deprived by the Privy Council 10th Sept. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for their majesties William and Mary. Re took away the key of the box, and refusing to deliver it, the session applied to the Sheriff, who granted their application. Being broken up in presence of the elders, 3d Aug. 1691, there was
