PRESBYTERY OF ANNAN p. 620
Edinburgh, studied and took his degree at the Univ. of St Andrews in 1603; trans. to Temple in 1620.-[Act. Rect. Univ. St. And., Edin. Guild Reg., Reg. Assig.] HODDAM. Previous to the Reformation the church belonged to the Archbishop of Glasgow. This parish was supplied by a reader along with Ecclefechan, see page 621.
1610. JOHN ALEXANDER, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of St. Andrews in 1603, adm. in 1610; he was one of fifty-five min. who signed a Protest in behalf of the Liberties of the Kirk 27th June 1617; nominated a member of the Commission for maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. 1634, and died 14th July 1660, in his 78th year. He marr. Isabella Barclay, who died 2d July 1682, aged 82, and had James of Knockhill, Mr John, min. of Durrisdeer, William, and Barbara.-[A ct. Rect. Univ. 1666. MATTHEW REID, A.M., trans. from Stapelgorton, died llth April 1681, in his 42d year and 19th min. The insicht with his books were estimat at j li. Frie geir, dd., jm jc xcvij li.
"His name he from St Matthew tooke, His skill in physicke from St Luke, A reed of John the Baptist kind, Not wavering with every wind; Ever a true Nathanael, He preached, lived, and dyed weill."
He marr. 6th Jan. 1665 Margaret Creichtoun, who survived him, and had three sons and three daugh., James, Matthew, min. of North Berwick, David, Agnes, Margaret, and Janet, who marr. Mr James Alston, min. of Dirleton.-[Tombst., Edin. (Marr.), Test. (Dumf.), and North Berwick Sess. Reg.]
