sentiments, and containing, as was not uncommon at that time, many instances of alliteration. In. describing the blessings of salvation, these are particularized,-" regeneration, reconciliation, remission, renovation, restoration, redemption from all evil, rejoicing of hope, reinforcement of grace, and reception into glory." With professional brethren he had an extensive correspondence, was an esteemed friend of Dr Erskine of Edinburgh, and much respected by English divines. Having been invited to dine with Mr James, rector of Arthuret, and appearing in a dress different from their usual guests, the servant, on opening the door, not knowing him, laid no poor were served here, on which he immediately walked off: The Parson from bis room seeing him turn away, rung the bell, and being informed of what had occurred, dispatched the servant immediately after him, but he refused to return, declaring " he should enter no house where God's poor were not served." He left a valuable library, containing all the Fathers, a fine set of classics, both Greek and Latin, with a considerable portion of history, but it sold for very little. A bookseller in Carlisle bought a portion for £16 or £18, from whom Mr William Laing of Edinburgh got only one article, which remunerated him for the whole of the portion. Mr G. marr. 1828. JAMES RODDICK, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 5th Feb. 1823, pres. by William, Earl of Mansfield in April, and ord. 4th Sept. 1828. REDKIRK OR RENPATRICK. The church was dedicated to St. Patrick. A presentation to the parish was given to BLAIS HAMMILTOUN, son of Andrew H. in Olis 30th Oct. 1575, who does not appear to have been accepted. It was then supplied by DAVID MYLLARE, reader from 1576 to 1579; and suppressed and united to Gretna by Parliament 24th June 1609.
