1656. JOHN HAMLILTON, A.M., graduated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 26th July 1649, he was called to Bedrule in May 1656, and died 1st May 1661, aged 32.-[Edin. Grad., Jedbrgh Presb., and, Test. Reg. (Dumf ), Tombst., Macfarlane MSS.]

 

l666. JAMES GLADSTAINS, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 14th July 1659; trans. to Yetholm in 1666.-[Edin. Grad., Macfarlane MSS., Kelso Presb. Reg.]

1667. THOMAS HENDERSON, A.M., trans. from Lochmaben, adm. before 7th May; died 27th April 1686, aged about 64. He marr. Agnes Maxwell, who had sasine with him of the lands of Barromeill and Broomell, as well as of North Croft 2d Dec. 1662 and 16th March 1663. The insicht, &c., amounted to jc merks, and the Inventar and debts ixc lxviij li., yet debita excedunt bona. He left a son, Mr Thomas.-[Edin. Grad., Macfarlane MSS., Test. (Dumf.), and New Gen. Reg. Sasines iv., Tombst.]

 

168-. JOHN HALIBURTON, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1679, deposed in 1692 for contumacy.-[Edin. Grad., Macfarlane MSS., MS. Acc. of Min. 1689.]

 

1693. JAMES BLACK, A.M., got his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 22d May 1685, licen. by the Presb. of Chirnside 9th June 1691, ord. 26th Sept. 1693; died 22d Oct. 1735, aged 69, in 43d min. 1730. JAMES GATT, a native of Cullen; having the Gaelic language, he was recommended by the Gen. Assemblies 22d May 1722 and 17th May 1723, and got an Exchequer bursary, writing yearly a Latin poem on receiving the allowance; studied theology under Prof. Hamilton at the Univ. of Edinburgh, was licen. by the Presb. of Linlithgow 30th Aug, 1727, pres. by David, Viscount Stormont 17th Nov. 1729, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 30th April following; died father of the Synod 31st Oct. 1787, in his 88th year and 58th min. Though modest, eccentric, and very primitive in his manners, he had a great fund of wit and repartee. He discharged the duties of the ministry with unwearied diligence and assiduity, exemplifying i n his walk and conversation the power of that religion which he inculcated, by the purity, simplicity, and affability of his conduct. He had an offer of being translated to the metropolis, which he declined, preferring his rural and pleasant retirement to all the fascinating society Edinburgh contained. Possessing classical attainments of a superior order, lie delighted in Latin versification, writing a poem every year on his birth-day. The book of Job was translated by him into Latin verse, also the Proverbs of Solomon, and a Diary. A very beautiful poem was written " On the Death-bed of his Mother," and another " On going to the Synod at Dumfries," with his elder, in which he described the country, and paid a high compliment to Comlongan, the seat of his friend and patron. A vol. of sermons preached in 1748 has been preserved in MS., entitled " Of Salvation," showing the necessity, the path, the purchaser, the price, the promise, the properties, the preparative for, and the preaching of salvation; the privileges, privileges, the partakers, the progress of salvation; the perfection, the practical use, and the proper improvement of salvation;" discovering a pious and sensible mind imbued with evangelical
