1694. JAMES MOFFAT, adm. 9th Oct. 1694; died 20th July 1714, aged 80. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of Will. Ker, Esq. of Ford, and sister of Sir Robert K. of Etal; she died 25th June 1708, aged 78.

 

" Scarce will an age aford such one So

                                                                  prudent, wise, and rare, Pious, humble,

                                                                  modest, meek and wise, Loadstone

                                                                  like, attractive, suete."

1715. JAMES HUNTER, called 30th Nov. 1714, and ord. 11th April thereafter; in the Sept. following he marched to Stirling as a volunteer in defence of the country, was Ares. to Hoddam by Charles, Duke of Queensberry in Aug. 1726; there being a competing presentation, however, both were laid aside by the Commission of Assembly in Nov. 1727. He was also pres. by the same patron to Middlebie in Feb. 1743, but the Synod 11th Oct. following refused the translation ; he died at Moffat 3d July 1 7 55, in 41st min. Isabel Howie, his relict, died at Annan 4th June 1793, in her 83d year.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Rae's Hist. of the Rebellion, Tombst., &c.]

 

1754. ANTHONY BLACK, son of Mr James B., min. of Gretna, licen. by the Presb. of Middlebie 8th Sept 1736, pres. to Kirkpatrick-Fleming by Sir Will. Maxwell of Springkell, Bart., in June 1745, but the Synod sustained the call to another in April following; pres. by Charles, Duke of Queensberry in July, and ord. (assist. and suc.) 31st Oct. 1754; died 20th April 1777, in 70th age and 23d min.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., Tombst., &c.]

 

1773. JAMES SMAIL, licen. by the Presb. of Jedburgh 4th Oct. 17 69, ord. (assist. and suc.) 16th Dec. 1773; trans. to Kirkmichael 3d Aug. 1796.-[Presb., and Syn. Reg., &c.]

 

1797. NICHOLAS SLOAN, licen. by the Presb. of Ayr 28th Sept. 1791, pres. by William, Duke of Queensberry in March, and ord. 4th May 1797; died 1st July 1844, in his 81st year and 48th min. He marr. 2d Jan. 1798, Dorothy Knubley, who died 24th July 1830, and had a son, Edward Knubley, min. of Sorbie, and Marianne, spouse of John Carlyle, Esq. of Dornock.-Publications-The Leading Features of the Gospel delineated, Carlisle 1806, 8vo.
