Presb. of Dumfries 2d Feb. 1709, for enlisting as a private dragoon, &c. He was accused at Linlithgow in 1718-1719 of marrying persons irregularly, and died 9th April 1719.-[Edin. Grad., Presb., Dun fries Presb., Linlithg. Sess., and Edin. Reg. (Bur.)]

 

1708. ARCHIBALD STEUART, A.M., attained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh, 6th March 1700, ord. prior to Oct. 1708, deposed before 15th May 1712, for fornication.--[Edin. Grad,, Reg. 1709, and Gen. Ass. 1702.]

 

1713. ROBERT JARDINE, licen. by the Presb. of Dunfermline 6th Nov. 17 12, ord. 3d Dec. 1713; trans. to Glencairn 14th Oct. 1719.-[Reg. Gen. Ass., &c.]

 

1720. WILLIAM CARLYLE, A.M., son of a farmer on the estate of Kelhead, descended from the family of C. of Bridekirk, was laureated at the Univ. of Edinburgh 24th May 1715, was tutor to the sons of Mr Hay of Spott, and afterwards chaplain in the family of Alexander, Lord Elibank, ord. 28th April 1720; trans. and adm. to Lochmaben in 1724. The admission was set aside by the Gen. Assembly 25th May, and he was restored to the parish, but was trans. to Prestonpans in same year.-[Reg. Laur. Univ. 1725. JAMES MUIRHEAD, A.M., obtained his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 29th April 1701, ord. in 1725; died 16th Sept. 1727, in his 48th year. He marr. Janet Paterson, who died 17th Dec. 1 7 70, and had a son John.-[Edin. Grad., Tombst., Test. Reg. (Dumf.)]

 

1728. WALTER COOK, A.M., had his degree at the Univ. of Edinburgh 21st April 1 7 057. licen. by the Presb. of Penpont, 3d Jan. 1722, ord. 17th Sept. 1728 ; died 21st April 1759, in 77th age and 31st min. 1760. THOMAS SMITH, preceptor to Mr M'Bride of Bedlan's family at Mountstuart, licen. by the Presb. of Dunoon 15th Sept. 1747, ord. in 1753 as min. of the Presbyterian congregation at Alston-moor, pres. by George II. 25th May 1759, and adm. 28th Feb. thereafter; died 6th June 1799, in his 82d year and 46th min. He marr. lst a lady who died in 1765 ; 2dly, 6th June 1793, Frances Irving, who died 16th May 1808.-[Presb., Syn., and Test. Reg. (Dumf), Tombst, &c.]

 

1797. THOMAS GILLESPIE, licen. by the Presb. of Langholm 3d May 1791, ord. (assist. and suc.) 21st Dec. 1797; died 26th Feb. 1828, in 73d age and 31st min.-[Presb. Reg.]

 

1828. GEORGE GILLESPIE, nephew of the preceding incumbent, studied at the Univ. of Edinburgh, licen. by the Presb. 31st Dec. 1823, pres. by George IV. in Feb. and ord. 12th Sept. 1828. He marr. 18th May 1835, M .ary Ann Ewart, and has two sons, Rev. Richard Addison, min of Crossmichael, and Rev. TRAILTROW.

The parish was supplied by JAMES CAMPBELL, reader, from 1576 to 1585; and was united to Cummertrees by Parliament 24th June 1609.
